Just thinking about the causes of the failures and the repeat.... I'd really think that the damage has something to do with the snow plow installation.

No sunroof option on the Colorada/Canyon is a big downside for me. I've read the roof is made from sheet molding compound so adding one might not be a good idea structurally.

The usual answers/reasons apply (reliability, resale, etc.), but I don't believe the Colorado is as 'refined' as the Tacoma. Most GM cars, trucks and the like, seem 'cobbled together'... some seemingly nice features at first appearance, but not thought out well from an engineering/manufacturing perspective, of which usually reveal themselves sooner or later. The majority of buyers either don't think long-term or are (increasingly) mechanically inept, so I think the lower standards of quality are the norm and considered acceptable from GM's sales point-of-view.

Also, I only clicked on this thread because I thought the thumbnail pic of the above was ar15/m16 charging handles. :anonymous:

To be very honest, GM didn't need to replace any frames in the first place. While I own several Toyotas, my 1998 Sonoma is still kicking right along with the only major repair being a clutch replacement due to a leaking slave cylinder. Toyota has a crap design also FWIW. Now, I could find a virgin and a unicorn easier then a 1998 Taco in my area if it's been run in the winter unless it has a new frame. A/C is geting a bit weak and the rockers will probably be holed this year from salt but for $3 grand paid in 2003, I have absolutely zero complaints. [base, crank windows, SB, stick with 4 banger, still has a better sound system then my 2014 and 2015 Toyotas, Yotas suck in the sound system area unless you open your wallet for the high end JBL.

Toyota also needs to get with the century and go fully boxed frame like everyone else did, even the colorado/canyon are fully boxed though the area by the rear wheelwell openings seem to be quite wimpy. My Taco seems to have the frame rigidity of my 1998 Sonoma at best. [they were pretty massive for the truck size but lacked torsional rigidity]

Competition is good for Toyota, they sat on their laurals for a hell of a long time.

I looked at a 2016 Canyon as well as the Tacoma. I don't like the front ends of the Colorado so that was a no go. Both the Canyon and Tacoma were DCSB 2wd 4cyl. The sticker prices were close but here's how it worked out:
Tacoma: no intermittent wipers or power driver seat
Canyon: no cruise control, no steering wheel controls, no locking diff (yes I know the Tacoma's is an electronic doodad)

I was only able to sit in the Canyon but even then the Tacoma felt better built.

Basically everything else said here (resale, reliability, etc.) Combined with the higher quality feeling and features made me pick the Tacoma.

I love my Tacoma, and fall more in love with it the more miles I put on it

nope nothing to do with the plow install even though i dont care too much for the new boss plows.
they have a hesitation when you go side to side.

Take it from a different angle, new member just joined, lists a chevy as his truck, seen a lot of this on TW, just gets old hearing this crap!
Yeah Toyota has a few issues, still the best light truck on the market for the time being!

I also was responding to this statement! ^

honestly i think gm has went down hill with service problems and defects in the vehicles.
i always loved chevy's growing up. but all our work trucks are chevys at work and they are always going to dealer for something or another. our 2010 hhr's are always going for ignitions or shifters. the colorado's for oil lines, the 2500's for trac control and stabilizers

I'll do the unthinkable here and say that I like both trucks. I test drove the Colorado and liked everything about it. I thought the engine felt powerful, but as I stated above, the GDI chased me away after seeing those 3.6L carbon images. I'm not a good enough mechanic to chase a problem like that. I was intrigued by the diesel, but the cost and emissions there made it iffy for me. But I'd be willing to bet that diesel sees mid 30s mpg highway on a consistent basis.

Can't argue with your points, I have owned '98, and '00 Tacomas, had no rusty frame issues, and both were fantastic trucks, also had a '80 that thing was a beast!

+1. Just got an $1100 estimate to fix a headlight out on my sister's 2009 Ram that my 21 year old daughter is driving.

I was surprised that January sales of the Colorado were down year over year. Maybe a one-off month, well see. And people on this forum forget the Tacoma comes in a very basic affordable 2X version so not everyone that buys a Tacoma is an off road poseur. I however am in the "majority of buyers" (and a poseur I suppose) that will probably never need all the off road gadgets and capabilities of the TRDOR but bought it anyway because.. why not?

As for the OP's question, I can't answer why YOU should not buy the Colorado. I only know why, after driving and considering both, I bought the Tacoma. Reputation for reliability (and more importantly my own experience with the Tacoma), potential higher resale ( again my actual past experience), and perceived quality. I liked the way the Colorado drove and handled on my test drive. As for looks, they are trucks, so...

I've drove both trucks n like em both. Trade/$ was a huge issue...Toyota wanted my business way more than Chevy/GMC. I also have a few features that GM twins don't offer: Moonroof w power slide n tilt, Qi wireless phone charging, JBL 7 speaker sound system w/440watts & sub (GM's Bose system is not as near as good), beautiful blue dash lights all around everywhere, AC outlet in the bed of the truck, and the push button start (no key needed to lock/unlock truck too).
