Just bought first tacoma,09 sport, been getting bad mpg,is it because it has leveling kit with 285/65/r18's on it,and if so what is a good on/off road tire.

How bad? what kind of numbers are you getting? Larger tires do have an impact and driving style is most important to getting better empeegees

Def need some numbers. 10mpg seems really low even for your setup. Air your tires up and use the chalk method to get the proper inflation. FYI 1/4 tank still has around 8 gals remaining in the tank.

Leveling kits change the aerodynamics of the vehicle. OR and under-inflated tires add extra drag as well. The pic is a little dark, but your tires look like BFG Rugged Trails. Those are decent on gas mileage (I just replaced mine), but they are larger than stock so that changes things, too. IMO, with that setup, you should be happy getting around 17 mpg avg.

Thank you for the feedback so far here is some of the answers to the questions I'm at 160 miles and I'm in between a quarter tank and a half tank exactly, the tires are BF Goodrich all-terrain triple ply,and the tires stick out one and a half inches from the side of the truck and here is a new picture..20151027_090827.jpg

You've only gone 160 miles and used 5/8 of a tank?!

You still have half a tank left in the tank regardless of your gauge. Drive her down to your comfort level. Fill it up and do the math of miles driven to gallons pumped in. I bet you are gonna see better mpg than you think your getting right now for your 21 gallon tank.

FWIW, since you just bought it you could disconnect battery for a bit, so the ECU can then re-learn YOUR driving style. Might notice a slight change, maybe.

    Wut?

You don't have a clue about his driving style or his location, what elevation he may be driving at, the temperatures he's driving in, and other huge factors that may be contributing to a low MPG return.

I'll add onto that, a lot of the stock 4x4 DCs on this forum don't see 17 MPG average, let alone those that are lifted with 285s.

I have '13 DC lifted and leveled with GY Wrangler Duratracs. I drive semi-aggressively. I average 16.7 MPG. I said he "should be happy..." I assumed nothing, that's why I said "In MY opinion.."

    Good job!

That's good info for someone in Columbus, Ohio.

For someone living somewhere else, that doesn't mean anything.

OP, disconnect your battery like was mentioned before and let the ECU reset, see if your MPG doesn't improve afterward.

Also, make sure you're getting your MPG correct, miles divided by gallons at every fill up.

I'm going to do what you guys said as far as drive the gas out ,then do the math, with a spare can of gas in the back of the truck and then fill it up n do it again, also I am not a leadfoot, and I live outside of Portland and commute back-and-forth to the city about 100 to 125 miles a day. Also I have been a Ford 150 truck owner my whole driving life of bout 20 years and this is my first Tacoma, I so love the Tacoma love and kinshipchip amoungst Us owners...any thoughts on getting a tire that's not so wide but staying with the 18s or should I go back down to a 17, I want to do a lot of off-road but it's also my daily driver .
