First thing, determine your truck's odometer error. Fill up to first click. Zero one of your trip odometers and run 50 miles per mile markers or GPS (drive 25 and turn around for 50 miles back to the same pump). If trip shows doesn't show 50, you have some error. 49 is under reporting by 2%, 51 is over reporting by 2%. 47 or 53 is 6% (3/50). Lets' say your trip show 48 miles, but mile marker/GPS shows 50. So for the future, add 4% to the miles shown to get true miles. If trip is over 50 miles, subtract 4%.

If over 50 subtract the percentage for true miles. Fill up again to first click AT THE SAME PUMP. You now have accurate miles and fairly accurate gallons, do the math. (my truck will take up to 2.5 gallons from first click, but I don't do it unless I'm on a road trip and going to burn at least 3 gallons or more right away, because of the charcoal filter). Pumps can and do vary on "click-off", both pump to pump at the same station, and even depending on how many vehicles are filling up at the same time.

Don't know your oem tire size, but you probably have 7-9% odometer error with those tires compared to most oem Tacoma tire sizes.

You really can't go by your fuel gauge, the pump at the station is much more accurate. If you had 3 Tacoma's, all showing exactly 1/2 full, there could be 3-4 gallons difference in what is actually in the tanks of the 3 trucks.

OP, you don't have to run the tank dry to get MPG. Fill it up, reset your trip odo, drive til the next time you need/want to get gas, use # of gallons from that fill up and miles on trip odo to calculate mpg. Also, has your speedo been recalibrated for those tires?

Yup. Your stock tires are larger than OEM. Which will make it seem like you are getting worse gas mileage. Since it is showing less miles driven than you actually are going. Thus "less" MPG.

That being aside from a higher coefficient of friction from wider tires, more weight, higher stance, and possibly low tires.

Make sure yoir tires have plenty of air pressure. That will really help.

You do not have to run it dry. Run it to 1/4 to 1/8 of a tank or so. Gas up and write down gallons put in/used and miles driven. You will also know how much gas is left in your tank. Since it is new to you...well you never know what the last owner did-I'll leave it at that. I was skeptical on my new truck until I put in enough gas to verify quantities with the photo I posted above. I drive 3k per month so it did not take long.

Good call^^^on speedo calibration. Compare with GPS or phone app. See if close. Might as well verify that as well.

Negative terminal can be pulled, most leave it off for an hour. Then just reconnect it and drive normally.

A lot going on here. OP's truck is a Sport. 265-65-17 stock size tire. His 18" tires are roughly %10 bigger than stock, divide milage by %10 and add that to original milage for roughly true miles driven. Divide the roughly true milage by gallons added for mpg. Heavier wheels, heavier tires, slightly lifted is not going to be stellar for mpg's.

My stock dclb Limited has 265/60/r18 tires and I have checked once and am getting 16.4 mpg. I did check the speed with a gps and it's off by 2 mph.....if it shows 60, I am really doing 58.

Like these guys said, DO THE MATH. Fill the tank at a specific pump and let the pump stop on it's own when full, drive a few miles (25-30) then go back to the exact same pump and fill the tank again exactly as before. ya done, do the MATH.
