    Hey Tacos!

I have a 2002 Prerunner 2.7L single cab stepside (stock height) and I need to do a suspension overhaul on it, which includes Bilstein 4600 front and rear shocks.

I purchased the shocks from shock surplus. They did not include the bushings/washers required. Some people on the forums said their Bilsteins included said hardware. Others have not. I am of the latter case.

I have been digging into these forums, trying to get all the information and parts needed to make this overhaul successful. I've encountered different answers among different platforms and I'm hoping those of you who have been in my shoes can shine light on what else I need.

I'm including a group of pictures.

(I'm replacing almost all parts with OEM as I don't want to do this again for a long long time :))

    FRONT SHOCK ASSEMBLY:

This picture shows the front shock assembly layout with the hardware I have (new springs are arriving in a few days).

DISCLAIMER: The Toyota Parts Dealer showed me this diagram here which he was basing my hardware requirements off of...

    upload_2025-1-27_17-50-5.jpg

However, I've also found this diagram here...

    upload_2025-1-27_17-52-58.png

Which one do I follow?? The first diagram shows two rubber bushings. The second diagram shows only one. I purchased new Toyota Strut Mounts and there is no visible integrated bottom bushing in the strut mount. I've read some people saying their KYB or Moog Strut Mounts (can't recall which or both) include an integrated bushing. The Toyota Strut mount doesn't appear to have one. There is a rubber "seat" where the mounting plate meets the truck which is included, but no bushing integrated like the bushings I needed to purchase.

Unfortunately, the part numbers on the first Diagram for the washers and bushings do not match the numbers on the bags the parts came in. If I do need two bushings, does anyone know the orientation for the bushing with the nipple? Does the nipple bushing go on the bottom or top? (Which also happens to have a smaller diameter than the flat bushing pictured here:
    upload_2025-1-27_17-58-9.jpg

Bushings aside, we arrive at the washers.. The first diagram shows 3 washers. The second shows 2 washers. These are the washers I have based on the order from the Toyotas Parts employee:

    upload_2025-1-27_18-0-29.jpg

If I just need the 2, does anyone know the orientation and order here? You'll notice the washer on the left has a larger ID, than on the right..

Lastly, we arrive at the bottom bolt and washer for the shock pictured here:

    upload_2025-1-27_18-3-57.jpg

The washer has a convex profile and I'm curious if the concave side goes against the shock?

    upload_2025-1-27_18-5-19.jpg

I had questions about the back shocks but this is already a lot to digest so I'll hold off for now..

I really appreciate any experienced insight into my scenario.

    I appreciate you all!

I did mine about 4 weeks ago I ordered all four shocks and installed myself. I compressed springs disassembled my original tokico shocks and reassembled on bilstein 4600's exactly like it came apart and installed. Mine were like the first diagram.

It went from bottom up = Shock - washer -little bushing - washer - top hat - bigger bushing - washer - locking nut and obviously coil spring and coil spring bushing.

Here's parts I used besides shocks.
    x2 gabriel bushing kit Amazon
    x2 kyb coil bushing rockauto

I reused my top hats saved $75 mine were fine hell if I would have painted them they would have looked new.
All I used out of the gabriel bushing kits for each side was 2 bushings and 2 washers comes with other stuff. I had to reuse 1 washer from my original parts to put it back together exactly like it was.

@Moonrman This is so helpful Thank you.

For the little bushing with the nipple, does that nipple point up or down?

That's good news you didn't need to replace your top hats. All I've been sucked into is a spending frenzy on my truck, but with hopes I won't have to for a long long time.

Its all good, Nipples up! Bottom bushing - like I said I reused 1 washer from original parts and thats the nipple up one. You will see when you dig in be safe when messing with the coils. Good luck

If your replacing the originals the new ride is outstanding for me it was anyways. I stopped bouncing thru turns and bumpy roads. Major improvement for mine.

    Nipples Up!

That's great to hear - glad it worked out for you.

I'll be trying the spring compression method using a floor jack. Definitely seems the safest.

Do you happen to remember any hardware needed (besides the bolts) for the rear shocks?

Uhhh, geez was quick and easy. No just a torque wrench. All the rubber came with shocks and I reused hardware. I'm in a pretty rust free area reusable parts and pieces that come off and on my truck get used again.

Thanks for the tip, motoman515.. I initially read that they should be replaced with factory bushings and other hardware, but when I went to the parts department at Toyota, they didn't have the correct diagram to work off of. I just received the recommended hardware kit above and I will examine what's currently on my truck. If I'm unable to match it, I'll reach out to Bilstein!

    Thanks again.
