Hey guys, I rebuilt the engine on my buddy's Tacoma and I'm reassembling the timing chain right now but before I go any further I would like to know where these two washers go. Thank you in advance your help.

Thank you! Yes, oh no is right! My first 3RZ-FE rebuild so when I remove the timing cover I heard something fall but I didn't know what I was looking for. All I knew is that it was a small piece of metal. Come to find out later on doing reassembly it was the key that holds the balance shaft gear holds the balance shaft together once you install the bolt. Anyway, I have some pictures from when I disassembled the engine but both washers just seem to be laying around in the background only to find out that they would be taunting me today. I'm not the best mechanic, but I certainly keep the components together with all the nuts and bolts for obvious reasons. The Haynes manual doesn't tell me and neither does charm.li and since I don't know what they go to it's not like I can go to my Toyota dealership and just ask for the schematic. Any ideas? Accessory bracket like the alternator, AC, power steering. I'm having a hard time deciding if to move forward with reassembly until I find out where they go by process of elimination. However, I don't want to have to install the timing cover twice if they go somewhere on the block before I put the timing cover on. Thanks again!

Those are more bearing than washer and appear fit a recess, possibly rotational application. I would guess on the back side of a pulley or similar.

If they fell when you removed the cover, look at the backside of the cover for any recesses they might seat in.

Figure out what size bolt they accept to start process of elimination.

Thanks scocar. Agreed sixcreed. I appreciate it topdog.

At first I was thinking they go when installing No. 1 timing chain tensioner slipper and No. 1 vibration damper, since they both rotate even after torqueing down the bolts. However I immediately realized they still rotate as they should once I torqued the bolts. Thanks again for responding so quickly. I'm moving forward. I do believe they go on pulleys. I can let y'all know if you want once I figure it out.

Thinking an actual Toyota service manual may have the key to this mystery?

One other thought if you are fortunate to have a Toyota dealership near by it might be worth the time to take these parts to the Parts counter at that dealership.

Talk with parts person, tell them what occurred, then hand them the parts and ask them if they can help you.

They kinda look like valve spring retainers.

Good idea woodcutter! Topdog, they do kind of look like retainers because the picture doesn't show scale. Here's a picture for size reference for you and space to tiger...and my apologies.

I checked the link you sent sAndrew, not it but thanks anyway. It was definitely worth a shot in the dark.

I believe they are for the slipper guide to let it pivot.

We dont get many 4 cylinders so its more of an educated guess, I've never tore one apart like this.

the id is just under 12 mm (11.7 if you calibrated the caliper). I didnt catch it 1st time, but the shoulder is different thickness so they are not the same parts and there is no “oil seal” on them so a spacer/sliding bushing comes to mind.

What does the backside of the covers look like? Look for recesses the smaller OD could fit into. If you find some, look for the corresponding part on the engine side to see if they fit.

    Are they made of steel?

Looking through my 99 factory manual for some ideas:

Here is one relative to the balance shaft - see pic. part #2 is a thrust spacer. It has a similar shape to the "washers" you have posted.

It is possible your "washers" went on the backside of a moving part; the bolt would go through the front end. If true, the pics of the engine work might not reveal where they go. Can you tell us how far you took apart the engine so we can look at the right diagrams to find these parts.

There is a similar use on the V-6 engine behind the No 1 Idler Pulley. The bolt is in the front and the spacer is in the back behind the idler pulley.

Jeez….seriously I have spent 45mins over 3 days looking at my 2rz manual
    I got nothing

    however
I think Bishop might be on to something
In your pix the T chain is not on the crank sprocket
But the chain is perfectly aligned on the pass side chain guide
In theory, if chain was mounted to crank sprocket, guide would need to move out to be aligned. If those Unk washers were mounted where Bishop says, would move guide out to accept alignment with chain on crank sprocket.
    Keep everyone posted

So they are steel. I know they don't go on the balance shafts nor do they go on the timing chain(s). After assembling the timing components yesterday, it appears nothing is missing. I've turned the crankshaft atleast 6 full revolutions to ensure proper functioning and no crashing between valves and pistons. I had to pause complete reassembly because it's raining and the truck is outside unfortunately. El Paso,Texas weather is as predictable as an ex-girlfriend. Photos attached to this post are representative of the status quo and where I stand....both literally and figuratively. Thank you all yet again.
