Ok so I'm thinking about buying an 87 4Runner. This one is supposedly restored. Brand new paint, new engine / tranny. New windshield. The whole deal. Pricey.

I took pictures of the underside. It kinda looks like a leak on the engine or transmission. I'm not really an expert mechanic but this can't be good. Is this an engine or transmission leak? Or is this even a leak at all. Is it possible the drain plug just needs to be replaced?
Call me paranoid, but is this okay to buy? Everything else seems fine.
Help ASAP would be greatly appreciated.

My first guess is a rear main seal. Not a huge problem to fix yourself, but it involves pulling the tranny and clutch. It is an easy job to do in a day without any rushing...

I would never say pulling a transmission and transfer case is a easy job .

while not a technically hard job it is quite a lot of work to a person that has never done it

If this has a new engine and Transmission something is not right .

Pray tell just what else is not right.

What kind of money are you talking here you might want to lower your offer buy a $1000.00 or more.

^ Agreed. What kind of "new" engine is that? did they just swap an engine with lower mileage or did they overhaul it? if they failed to address those details like the replacement of wear items such as a rear main seal during an engine overhaul, I wonder what other items they might have missed.

It is to bad that some people use the term NEW to mean anything installed in the vehicle

New is not used New Rebuilt I can understand .

A engine or Transmission of unknown quality is for sure not new

I looked at a 4Runner years ago it was advertised with new engine Sure it was new 90,000 miles ago seems that part was left out.

Granted some people are clueless one really needs to keep focused when checking things out.

I know myself caught up in the desire and lust of a new to me 4x4 I have over looked some really easy to spot problems.
