Please Help with rear brake adjustment

I pulled my rear drums today using the screw in bolt method....worked great

I have adjusted lots of rear brakes,but how can I accurately adjust this set up?

Im use to pulling the drums tightening the adjustment wheel untill I feel some drag

Or even sometimes put the tire back on and spin it making sure I can get one full revolution of the tire

But with the tacoma the drive shaft is turning and everything just feels so heavy and nothing I do seems accurate.

Can someone please give me some pointers on adjusting the rear brakes

So many ways to do it. Just put the truck in neutral and try that..make sure the truck is up off the ground on stands. It is a feeling. Not if it spins one turn.

 

Mike am I rite? If I spin the adjuster wheel downward that makes shoes tighter rite?

I mean if Im looking rite at it with the drum off

 

The adjuster will only turn one way easiely. Trying to go the other way will lock you up with the self adjusting pawl. Slight click as you ratchet on the pawl

 

Mike just the rear of the truck has to be up correct?

 

In order for you to get the best chance possible to get it right yes. Supported and in neutral. I do it a couple of different ways and I've done it so long I don't think about how I do it. So it's hard for me to explain it when I could show you in a min hands on..

 

Mike my last question would be is it ok to jack it up by the rear axle. As long as im as close to lead spring brackets as possible? Thanks

 

If you have a good floor jack just Jack it up under the pig and lift the whole truck up. Make sure the truck is on level surface and front tires chocked. Throw some stands under the frame in front of the front spring mount and lower the rear end down to get room to work around the adj hole from underneath if you keep the tires on. Or support under the axle and take the tires off. Main thing for you is being safe with the axle off the ground.

 

Toyota Service Manual says to tighten the brake until the drum doesn't turn ( locked ). Then back off the adjuster 15 Notches of the adjuster.

Do this for each side.

Edit: Corrected to 15 notches.

 

thanks jimmy...Sounds like a plan but the adjuster doesn't click when you turn to loosen because you have to move the self adjuster lever from hitting the wheel. But I do see what you mean...Thanks

 

I do use this method once in a great while however ,for someone will less experience ,will be a pain in the ass.
Needing to use a release tool.
Like I said there are a few ways to do this.
oh btw. If you really want to get technical then you should be backing off the e-brake adj so there is no chance of you adjusting on the strut instead of the shoe anchor. And 15 clicks makes for a lower pedal on my truck. I never count clicks.

 

Im just gonna take it into toyota...
I think they also need to bleed the brakes again after my frame was replaced. Feels luke I may have some air trapped.

How long is the labor under warranty ones the frame has been replaced? Thanks

 

If its a month or so I don't see an issue. A year will be a stretch. All depends on what they find. Air in lines yes. Brake wear no..

 

Called service manager...he said they will bleed them again,and will adjust my rears
Of course I will pay for the adjustment
