I ordered the AT3 tires for my Tacoma after reading through the forum. The guy at the tire shop and I spoke about the benefits of going with a 255 versus a 265 tire (width). I has asked about the 255/70R17 but said I wanted the 265/70R17. I picked the truck up after closing to find out it had the 255/70R17 tires installed.

The 255's are a 1/2 taller than the stock tires (265/65R17) at 31.1" but still about 0.5" shorter than the 265/70R17.

Is there an benefit or drawback to staying with the 255/70R17? I have left a message about ordering the 265/70R17 but these do look good without worrying rubbing mudflaps or removing them.

In summary, I have a slightly narrower tire (I don't notice it) and slightly taller.

    Thoughts?

Just leave them unless you didn't want E Rated tires to begin with.

They were closed when I picked up the truck and I said to order the 265's...he made a mistake...not a problem. I see very few who have 255's and I am curious as to why. If there is a drawback I will have them swapped. If there is not or even a benefit, other than looks, I will keep them. I was just very surprised when I got home...it was very cold and dark so I didn't read the sidewalks when I picked up the truck.

Most tire manufacturers don't make a 255/70, that's why you don't see it. I would personally keep it, probably get better mpg with slightly smaller/lighter tire.

I've got 255s (albeit 255/85/16s) and really like them. The only thing I'd do if I were you would be to check pricing and make sure you didn't pay for a more expensive tire and not get them.

Unless he ordered 40 lb C rated 265s and was given 60 lb E rated 255s. Then probably not..

My first thought is to keep them b/c I get a slightly larger tire without rubbing and, hopefully get better mpg's, as you suggested. I was concerned about so few 255's but after writ My this I remembers that 255's are the standard width on Jeep Rubicons. I was more irritated that worried since we discussed the 265's.

If nobody is aware of a drawback, I will keep them. I appreciate your quick responses and will check the price difference; they are p-rated, which I wanted.

If this was an answer to my 'why' question, I should have asked the question better.

I meant why did you buy new tires, this model of tire, and why did you specify the 265?

All that may (or may not) play into whether you keep what you got or exchange.

For example, if it's the same tire with only the size difference, and you bought them for looks, but can't tell the difference, no big.

If they are different tires (ratings, etc.) and you were buying for a specific functional purpose, and the tire doesn't meet that, then a swap is in order.

I understand now what you meant, thanks for clarifying. I intended to get a p-rated tire, which it is. I also want to go slightly larger, which I did. I was only going with the 265 because that seems to be the standard by most posting on TW. I have no real concern about going narrower unless there is a drawback such as reduced traction or worsening gas mileage. I wanted a good A/T tire that was not too aggressive and performs well in the rain snow and ice. From the responses so far it does not seem as if there is a drawback other than looks. Looks are secondary to me, especially since the tires do look really good.
