Should really protect your own vehicle when jump starting with a surge protector. Too much electronics to go haywire. Never really believed in them until now.

Get a NOCO GB40 instead of using jumper cables. Those are designed to NOT surge-feedback the electrical system

EDIT: Some report that they are smart enough to know you attached red-to-black and black-to-red and just reverse the flow internally.

Weird that this popped up. Yesterday I'm sipping coffee at my desk and gazing out at the parking lot, tryin to find my motivation for a Monday.

For a year, theres been this curious exchange of children in the parking lot at work that happens twice a week. Every Monday and Friday, a strange Rav4 and a strange minivan show up. And three children hop out of one car and hop right into the other. Neither child-wrangler are employees, but for all appearances it looks like some parents that chose our industrial plant as a safe space to exchange custody. Nobody gives them any grief, but we like to sip our coffee and make up gossip while this goes on. Anyways, yesterday I notice that they are struggling. The owner of the Rav4 is having battery problems and the owner of the Sienna is failing miserably at jump starting the Rav4. I laugh at this for a couple of minutes while checking my email. And then I think to myself, alright self, they have suffered enough. Its a little chilly and them kids are probably a little chilly. So I walk out there while the Sienna is trying to reposition to a different parking spot so that his dollar-store cables might be able to reach the battery of the stranded Rav.

I walk out there and open my trunk, and I retrieve my little Amazon purchased chinese jump pack. And I go and says hello. I get their story, that papa lives forty miles to the southwest and grandma lives forty five miles to the northeast, and these kids like to go stay at grandmothers house every weekend. They chose to meet at our little industrial plant because the lights are on 24/7, and its a safe and secure parking lot away from traffic for the safe exchange of the children. And while I'm listening to their story, I attach my little amazon purchased chinese jump pack and start their poor stranded Rav lickety split. Papa said that he now knew what to get grandma for christmas. They thank me for the assist, I wish them good luck, and I walk back inside. And I finish my coffee. And now I know the story of the strange parking lot child exchange, thanks to my amazon purchased chinese jump pack. I carry it everywhere.

You can get anything you want, at Alice's restaurant.

Have you tried disconnecting and recomnecting thr battery cables? I could easy see noise in the system from jumping causing a misread by the ecu.

Toyotas shitty electronics aside, im much more a fan of the supercap based jump packs than the lithium ones. Had one lithium pack puff, glad it didnt thermal runaway in my toolbox. Supercaps wont do that.

I've entertained thoughts on one of these, there are several manufacturers to choose from - but I have read tales
of these things causing electronics issues - like frying out some electronics in the car -

Being absolutely stupid in regards to all things electrical, voltage, amperage, etc is this thing fool-proof?
I mean any of these devices can jump a battery but can they all do it without frying the electronics ?...
From your statement I take it this unit has some kind of protection for that?

Question 1: In 2 sentences or less can you explain it to someone who knows not ?
Question 2: Would you trust this thing enough to buy one for your 22 year old absolute babe daughter lest she get stranded on a dark road ?

It is a battery, essentially. Like those tiny blocks people buy to recharge cell-phones for $20 at WorstBuy. GB40 has enough juice and battery connect leads to handle a car battery instead of just cellphones ... and supposedly 6 vehicle on a charge.

I would buy it for her. I used a lesser-quality one years ago to help two "younger, spend more money on clothes than batteries" females with a dead battery. It did not spark or blow up anything. Of course I had let it go flat over more than a year so that one use killed it. But I lived in a city so did not buy a new one until I moved to AZ and only after I bought my Tacoma to go off-road.

I suppose it could fry a vehicle system ... anything could. But here in TW (whine-and-cheese capital of the internet) I have not seen reports. And as to "reversing the leads" I would not try it myself ... just saying that some report it has the ability to adapt.

+1 for disconnecting and reconnecting the battery.

Also, maybe top off the tank and see if it goes away and acts normal. :notsure:

@0xDEADBEEF , can you recommend a supercap jump-pack? I have a lithium one that I'm not particularly fond of. I wouldn't mind an upgrade.

My wifes subaru has gas gauge issues, and my strong thoughts on this are related to its underpowered charging, and therefore battery. They seem to come and go together.

They’re super easy to use. Its a battery in a plastic box with two jumper cables coming out of it. Connect black to black and red to red turn on wait maybe ten seconds and turn the dead car on. Turn off the box and remove cables. You can also use it to charge things like phones or other electronics with a USB in a pinch. Many also have a flashlight of some sort on them. No other car necessary and way faster and safer than a traditional car to car jump. I’d recommend them for anyone, especially my daughter if I had one.

Some have noted that in some rare instances the two battery terminals are further apart than the plugs on the NOCO ... I cannot recall the specific circumstances. Maybe some jumper cable to help span the missing reach, but just to span that gap with the booster block.

All you need is a positive connection(battery) and a ground. If you can't find a ground within 3 inches of the positive, you must have a plastic car.
