This is reason why self driving cars still are not a thing.. its a computer, it sees yes or no, there is no maybe. So this causes stupid things like this to happen. Just drive it as a true truck should be driven! without help of fancy computers.

    1. In my early days of using the radar cruise system, I learned that if the car in front is decreasing speed quickly while changing lanes or turning, I need to cancel cruise. The system does not determine your lane is "clear" until the car in front of you is COMPLETELY gone. Sounds like this was a case where you were safe, but the system still thought a car was in front. Just take over driving real quick, then resume cruise when clear.

    2. The slightest input on throttle will cancel automatic braking applications when in radar cruise. Helps alot when you want to lane change. Let off the pedal, and the system takes back over.

    3. PCS can be disabled in the settings menu. It will turn back on when the truck is shut off and restarted. There's a TSB you can have applied to remember the setting after vehicle shutoff.

Thank God I have a 17 without this crap but my wife’s 22 Prius has all that crap and it has done what you described several times. The Prius manual says that you can turn it off but it automatically resets when you restart your vehicle.

Has happened to me before, that's why I drive with the traditional cruise control (Hold cruise control on for 5sec). I can't stand adaptive cruise control, especially in a built vehicle when momentum is crucial.

I've never used cruise control. I must be in a small minority; but I like feeling in control.

I used it all the time. It helps me from speeding

Helps on long trips when I drive from state to state.

Yes this has happened to me as well in my Tacoma.

I never use the adaptive cruise control for this reason exactly. It’s extremely dangerous and could lead to a terrible crash because the truck automatically applies the brakes (heavily) without any warning. It’s honestly so dangerous I can’t believe they can have a feature like that in a vehicle.

There’s been at least one time that it has almost gotten me rear ended at highway speeds when a vehicle in front of me was changing lanes (and there was no danger of a collision). Fortunately I reacted quickly enough and was able to turn off the cruise control.

I only use the constant speed cruise control now. I’m shocked that Toyota or another automaker hasn’t been sued because of a crash resulting from a feature like this one. Maybe they have and I just never heard about it.

Yep, happens more often than it should.

    1. Steer away from the lead vehicle so the sensor no longer sees it.

    2. Hover right foot over the gas pedal to overpower the automatic braking system.

    3. Turn off ACC until the car is gone, then restart it.

I do it relatively seamlessly now. I use ACC more than I use the gas and brake pedals. The Volvo system is much better.

Also OP, if it wasn’t already mentioned…

When you’re turning on the cruise control, hold the button down for a few seconds and it will select “constant speed cruise” control instead of the adaptive cruise control. This is the traditional cruise control that maintains one speed and won’t react to vehicles in front of you. That’s all I use in the Taco.

Thank you all for the responses. Not wanting to insult or discourage answers; my thoughts are that any system that endangers life or may create accidents is not "smart". In fact; if systems are installed in devices that are to replace human thought or response; they should be smarter than humans or not be installed. My question is; "If you know that your vehicle "emergency brakes needlessly - as in my case and I and/or the dealership knows that this auto braking happens needlessly and we do nothing about it - Who is responsible IF my vehicle causes an accident where there is a death or heaven forbid a crippling?"
I'm far from being legal counsel but I believe I know the answer.......

Thank you Road_Warrior. I will use your suggestion as a "drive around" until there's a better solution offered.

If Toyota drivers bodies were stacking up at the morgue, something would have been done already. It's more a perceived problem than real.

The system isn’t autopilot, you can’t forget about driving and have a coffee. You are still driving. And yes, you are still responsible. If your emergency braking system activates, and the moron behind you is too close, that’s their problem and they’re responsible for the accident.

if we were to not partake in anything that could hurt us or someone else, we wouldn’t be driving cars or bathing or cooking because these and many other activities have killed and will continue to kill people. Maybe we should all have on padded suits with helmets?

You tried the ACC and don’t like it, don’t use it. Write to Toyota and tell them that it needs significant improvement before your comfortable with using it.

Yes, happens in our Honda Passport quite a bit. However, I can turn of adaptive cruise control and all is good. I have not had my Taco do this to me.
