The NPS's job is to preserve the area for future generations. If that means prohibiting use of an area to protect it from people who would destroy it through misuse, that's what they have to do. Eventually the birds will move to a new nesting site (might take a while, but it'll happen) and the area can be open to ORV access. In the meantime, it's the price we pay for previous misuse. So yes, prohibit is part of their job.

I have read it. But you must understand that everything you love about a recreational area- the trees and natural features that make the park enjoyable- are supported by an ecosystem that will eventually break down as animal species disappear or move to areas with less human activity. The vegetation will change, which causes rates of erosion to change, and eventually that landscape will be gone. It has nothing to do with loving the birds, and everything to do with wanting to preserve the park for the benefit and enjoyment of the American people. That's what conservation is. The NPS is doing what they should do.

How can "benefit and enjoyment of the American people" if they don't let any one on the beaches????? Besides the birds????? I don't see any benefit for American people in this. The recreational area was put in place in those parks for ORV, fishing, surfing etc. now they are trying to totally close the beaches.

I'm with bethes...so is this beach just closed to vehicles or people on foot as well? I don't see the issue. If it's protected because of a certain species of wildlife that inhabits it, get over it. We've already screwed up the majority of the environment and the mentality that people should have access and do whatever they want is the reason it's like that.

I did- And that is a whole separate issue. ORV access and complete closures are two different things-despite what that VERY biased video would have you believe.

They have closed all access to the beach whether ORV or walking.

Which is a different issue because guess what-Even if the rule change is defeated-Those sections will still be closed under other portions of the NPS authority.
Trying to turn several issues into one is dishonest.

Hey asshat! It's a National Seashore RECREATIONAL area. Not a National Park. 2 different zones established for 2 completely different uses.

What is dishonest about it and why would they close it under other portions?

It's dishonest because the ORV rule has NOTHING to do with foot traffic...So trying to blame the ORV rule for destroying businesses in the area isn't true at all. It might be a small part- but there are greater problems.
Do you really think if the ORV rule is defeated that ORVs will be allowed where they don't allow walking?? I'm all for wheeling and I'm all for tread lightly. Sadly-Leaving open access to any area leads to abuse and damage....

Is there a need for real management-Yes. Is there a better approach then complete closures-Yes....but chicken little "the sky is falling" claims don't impress me.

Issues like this always start with just ONE park. They see how people react and then start rolling out the rule to every park.

I do not agree with the OP calling the NPS "terrorists", but they are going over board. This administration has been trying to close access to BLM land and restrict access to NPs all over the country.

I am confused by what you are not seeing here? They have closed all access to the beach which includes ORV and foot traffic right? If right, then it is decimating the local economy.

Spare me your angst at name calling great web troll.

ORV use is the main reason for going down there, it's a fishing beach. No other reason to go down there. That's why the businesses are hurting more and more over the years. That bird is not endangered and used to nest on the interior of the island, until they closed it, now they nest on the shore so they close that

I am glad people are thinking about this, what ever they think, and that they opened up more of the beach.
