Always in helmets and gear. Never, ever in shorts, sneakers, flip flops, ect. Crashed too many times in full leathers on the motard to do any different. It hurts!

I ride to work every day. And I have to dress and look semi-professional. In heavy cotton pants and a pair of redwings. Best I can do without lugging full leathers around.

You need to chill out, no need for the insults. It's not required by law in some states so it's up to the rider to decide. I agree that it's not a good idea to ride without gear but if someone thinks otherwise, and it's legal, power to 'em. Insults and lectures aren't going to change their minds.

Trust me doesn't hurt my feelings and I don't take it personal if someone doesn't wear one. Just giving my opinion.
Completely insane not to wear one period. Way to many factors other than just the rider. Not worth losing your life over it. What is so cool about not wearing one?

I don't think people that don't wear helmets are bad people or hate them or anything else.. I just think its retarded not to wear one.

It's true that some crashes are fatal even with a helmet, but there's no denying that a helmet will prevent you from dying in many instances. I had some punk kid, hardly older than I am now, die in the corner of my yard several years back. I was sitting out there when it happened. Watched him try to pass a truck, lose control, and hit the curb with his head and roll up into my yard. eleven or twelve years old, and I watched a kid maybe ten years older than me bleed his life out and lay broken on my property, just because he didn't want to wear a helmet. He wasn't even going that fast.
So even if you don't care about killing yourself, think about those who are going to have to deal with your death, who are going to have to look at you. Think about your family. Think about your friends. Think about the poor little kid that might see it happen. Spare them all the intense mental anguish. Because when you see something like that, you remember if forever.
    My 2 cents.

It's to the point for me that even moving my bike around from the garage to my driveway without a helmet/leathers/boots/gloves feels AWKWARD. It drives me BATTY seeing guys flying down the highway with shorts, flip flops and a t-shirt on. It even gets to me to see guys on their bike with a helmet, but flipflops and no gloves, like.... There isn't really a "It's better than nothing" club one must sign up for.

The new commercials Ford put out "And is better" are rather poignant. I've seen too many accidents and know what will happen if you aren't wearing all your gear.

This is a truck forum. Who here would go out in the middle of nowhere without water/gear to survive. Who here would go out 4x4ing without the right tires, a spare tire etc.

With that logic, why the hell would you go out on the road with a billion drives doing whatever the hell they want on a bike without every opportunity to be prepared for the worst? Logic/Fail if you do.

    Keep the shiny side up

What about on bicycles? How many of you always have and do wear a helmet on a pedal bicycle?

Def wear a helmet, skiing too. And F riding my bicycle on a road!! Too many people not paying attention that could run me over and kill me!!! It scares me how inattentive some people are while behind the wheel.

But back on topic... Helmets gooood, no helmet baaaad

I grew up in NY and laws were put in place when I was young requiring riders under the age of 14 to wear a helmet. When I was young, I never did until that law took affect. Now, most of my riding is off road so I always wear a helmet (and it's got some pretty good gouges in it from branches). I've gotten into the habit of wearing a helmet on the road also because it's usually riding with my little cousins and it's easier to tell them wear a helmet if you're wearing one also. Admittingly though, if I'm just putzing around a campground, I won't wear a helmet on a pedal bike.

Here in NY it's actually a law that you have to wear one on a bicycle if your in a start park regardless of age. And it is still true for all kids to wear one. Probably put in place due to lawsuits against the State.

I know, I grew up in NY :)

The law requiring kids under 14 to wear a helmet got put in place when I was 13. I used to camp there a lot also (way upstate NY) but now I usually go to either NH or ME.

I'm a road cyclist, wouldn't be caught dead on a pedal bike without a helmet either. Our heads are the most delicate part of our body by far, and instrumental in every single thing we do. One wrong bump, scrape, gouge, anything can be the difference between surfing the TacomaWorld forums to drooling all over your computer and keyboard non-stop day in and day out the rest of your life.

Helmet is on 99% of the time. Only time I ride with it off is out at our land outside of town when I'm teaching others to ride my dirt bike because I'm hopping on and off to show them things and am going under 15mph on soft dirt. But if I go out there alone I wear the helmet 100% of the time.

Full riding gear I gauge on my trip. I know many who say atgatt, and I'm typically one of them, but I will admit if I'm staying on 25mph roads to go pick up groceries I only do pants, closed toe shoes, gloves, helmet, eye pro, but no jacket or anything. On the highway you can be down to bone in seconds if you slide. In town, I opt for a lighter jacket or no jacket depending on my own discretion.

While I am not yet a motorcyclist, it is great to read through this thread and see so many riders in support of wearing helmets. I hope to eventually purchase an enduro type motorcycle to bike camp and explore the back roads of the rural counties around here. I have been employed in various branches of Emergency Services for many (20+) years. I have seen terrible emergency scenes involving motorcycles, such as those mentioned in this thread. I have seen tragic incidents where a helmet would have absolutely, positively affected the outcome in a favorable manner. Even to the extent of: walking away from the accident relatively unharmed, VS. Death! Do some online research in emergency medicine on TBI (Traumatic Brain Injuries). I do understand motorcyclists' reluctance to have yet another law forced on you (i.e. states w/ mandatory helmet use ). Please consider helmets, protective riding apparel, and defensive driving, folks.........Death is final! Stay safe out there!

Yeah, I saw that. I was referring to the law for adults as well. Its required regardless of age. Wasn't sure if you were aware.

It's smart for the kids to be required. They aren't old enough to understand the consequences in most cases. Then when they reach the age they can use their own judgement.

I don't ride a motorcycle, but I grew up living my life on BMX and freestyle bicycles. I raced for 4 years and they were very strict about helmets/long pants/etc. I would never use my ramp in my driveway without at least my full face helmet..parents' rule but I would have done it anyways.

I learned the adult law the hard way... I got pulled over by a Park Ranger at a campground. Talk about embarrassing! The guy could have just pulled up next to me to tell me but no, lights on and kept them on like a normal traffic stop (keep in mind this is in a state campground, I was the entertainment for a LOT of campers)
