The misso goes to yard sales often and regularly drops discs onto my desk to add to the collection. I’ve got a bunch to add still.

Does anyone have any bright ideas?

I just bought a set of 5.1 speakers for my computer, got everything connected last night and tested with Windows sound settings. Everything works perfectly.

Until I fire up a movie in PLEX Media Server. Then it only plays over the left and right channels. If I play the same movie by opening it in Windows Explorer, the surround sound works.

So I downloaded regular old PLEX (not Media Server) and the surround sound works.

So either there's a limitation in PMS or there's a setting that I can't seem to find.

    Thoughts?

5.1 on your computer sounds pretty posch. I'm still using an Altec Lansing computer speaker set with a sub I bought in 1999. for the reason you're only hearing stereo with the plex app vs a web browser, my only guess is the plex app is doing some kind of transcoding to conserve bandwidth. not sure check the player settings.

I figured since the motherboard on my new desktop supports 5.1 and I got the speakers off of shopgoodwill.com for a whole $10, why not?

I've dug through the settings numerous times and looked through redit threads and PLEX articles but I just can't crack it.

Worst case, I need to have both PLEX and PMS installed. A bit irritating but not the end of the world.

And I'll get you added when I get home tonight.

Are you familiar enough to check the setting in the stream? While watching the 2.0 version first look at your dashboard on the PC streaming plex and see what the stream says there (Probably something about converting/remux or something) that is changing the audio from 5.1 to 2.0

Next in your player go into the settings and see of you can force direct play.

Also, if you have subtitles on, turn them off and see if that fixes it...

Pretty sure I've tried most of that but I'll investigate when I get home.

One side affect of being in this thread is that I’ve been encouraged to get a few more discs off of my desk.

If I play the movie in PMS, and look at the dashboard in PLEX, it says it's transcoding from TrueHD 5.1 to AAC. AC3 5.1 transcodes to AAC, too.

If I play the movie in PLEX, and look at the dashboard in PMS, it says it's direct playing TrueHD.

Enabling/disabling direct play and direct stream changes nothing.

If it's a subtitle issue, I'm kind of screwed because while it says "none" for subtitles, because of how I run all of my movies through HandBrake, they aren't burned in but I can't turn them off on the PC.

At this point, I'm conceding that I'll just use PMS as the server and watch them through PLEX. What's one more program installed on my computer?

The server will be offline for a few more hours and then I’ll leave it up all weekend.

I got a little upgrade for the system I run Plex on for Christmas. I was getting close to filling a 4Tb drive with media. Santa got me a 16TB! I also got some Dr Who blue rays to rip and add to my collection.
