Man, tough crowd. Guy asked a pretty straightforward question, yeah? I’m always interested to learn about the capabilities of this truck, so I’ll middle through an attempt at an answer and hope someone with an electrical background will either confirm or point out my mistakes.

Again, I’m no engineer, but the PS4 seems to have a max rated energy input of 250w. According to Wikipedia the practical usage is more in the 180s.

The truck produces 400w running (the 100w engine-off mode isn’t gonna cut it here, sorry), so after PS that leaves you with an energy budget of between 150 and 220w for your screen. Depending on your comfort with pushing limits.

From my quick googling, that budget is tight for a projector, but there seem to be several LED TVs in the 55” range that only suck down 100w.

My bottom line: you’ll be breathing exhaust the whole time, but I think the truck can do it

The only camping I did when playing a video game was during counter strike, and I didn't need to go outdoors to do that ;)

Had this happen once, on a quiet evening sitting in my lawn chair listing to the owls, some guy pulls up in a motorhome and fires up the generator, then turns on a televised baseball game real loud.

I’ll plug an AC motorized tool into it, but not my expensive electronics because I still wonder how good that synthetic “AC” sinewave is being put out by the OEM inverter, and if its a ragged sawtooth “sine”, it can smoke things. I don’t have a oscilloscope anymore, has anyone checked it?

OP- best to get a pure sine inverter “PSI” for your electronics and go directly to the battery.

Used these extensively downrange to power small medical clinics/CCPs. I WISH they'd run for 24 hours on a gallon of gas. More like 8. But still, amazing generators!

Thanks to all the helpful posts so far.

So, for my purposes, (hanging out in the bed and playing video games from a PS4 and small LCD TV), am I better to use the plug built-into the Tacoma (along with an extension cable, for plugging both items in at once), or a small portable generator?

Does the full engine have to be running for power to be supplied to the outlet? If so, how much gas would I burn through, just by letting the engine idle and playing my video games?

I don't understand all the haters.

I just want to turn my bed into my hangout zone.

As it turns out I play a lot of video games.

Don't know if the plug in the bed is the best route, or a Honda generator like someone else suggested.

Not sure if I am going to burn a lot of gas by using the truck plug, or if it wears the engine/battery just by letting it idle while I play games.

You will burn more gas using your truck then the Honda generator. Go that route. The hate comes from people that like to enjoy nature and camping with out people blasting COD or God Of War in the distance. It’s your truck do what you want.

I’d choose the generator, but sounds like you have a couple of fun weekend experiments to work on. 1) let the truck run a tank of gas down on idle (gives you your idle consumption and how much gas you’ll “burn through” in a finite amount of time). 2) play some video games on the bed of your truck while it runs on idle, post some pics, and give us a detailed review on truck gaming. Heck you might even wanna video the whole thing and upload on YouTube. I’m sure someone less brave has wondered and not asked the great wisdom of TW. Good luck and don’t forget to carry extra gas.
