True but I'd be shocked if a ranger actually ran the permit number to check (if the system is even has that capability). In all my years out wheeling and riding motos I've NEVER been checked for an OHV permit or seen anyone checking. I don't even stick mine to the truck since they're such a pain to remove, just keep it in the glove box with the purchase paperwork ready to show if requested. If they hassle you say you bought a new truck and switched the shell over.

The dunes are the only place where I think you MIGHT run into someone and get checked. I've seen rangers out sound checking moto/quad exhausts before in Florence and sheriffs giving DUIs on holiday weekends.

My permit is in my glove box and never been checked even after I spoke to a Sheriff at the trail head... I just figured I'd mention it that it was tied to a VIN#

I've been checked at least twice I am aware of. Both times at Browns camp OHV, both weekends. The sheriffs were waiting at the end of a trail each time. Really chill guys.

Once a guy I was with got a ticket for not having one. He did have a Washington discover pass though. Sheriff seemed confused as to reciprocity of permits. Ended up getting the ticket ripped up before we left. The ticket was only a "fix it ticket" in any case. IE, buy a pass, show proof and it's good. That being said, Oregon only charges a very reasonable $11 per two years. Compared to Washingtons $30 a year. They also do use that money for trail maintenance. If you off road in Oregon, you should buy the pass.

That same time my OHV permit was valid, but hidden by my then new canopy. I was never asked about it and they likely could not see it. So I believe they did indeed run my plates, but I am not certain.

Damn that's the first time I've heard of someone being checked. And for the record by no means was I condoning trying to get away without one, I always keep an up to date OHV permit. $11 is too cheap of insurance not to.

Wasn't implying you were. Was more of a general statement, since I basically just told everyone they could get away without having one with little risk.

This is my biggest gripe with the WA system. It's not only the NW Forest pass, but you also need the "Discover" pass, depending whether it's a federal or state park... and I've displayed the wrong pass in the past and gotten a ticket. Now I just throw them all on the dash and let the ranger sort it out.

Not to be confused with this fucker... that comes with your fishing license and isn't good for a god damn thing...

I just get the America the Beautiful pass and Discover Pass every year and it covers everything in Washington besides private logging lands.

America the Beautiful covers any land the federal government manages while the Discover pass covers any land that WA state manages.

I also typically just put both passes on my dash.
