Is that a .308? Or did you go with another flavor of AR?

I've been thinking of setting up an AR upper w/ a 18" 6.5 Grendel barrel for deer and (maybe) close range elk after seeing what some guys have been doing with the round on Youtube

 

458 socom, Speer 400 gr rnsp. About 1550 out the muzzle.
I like big slow bullets.

Took a big 5pt bull with it two years ago.

 

Sometimes a job requires finesse, other times a hammer. 458 socom a BFH. Badass round

 

I was able to knock one down in the late season, my first whitetail. Public land.

Thanks man! My 90 year old grandpa got to be there when I brought it out of the woods and he helped me skin it so that was the icing on the cake

 

How fast were you driving to knock it into the woods

With that said, does anyone have any recommendations for a game cart? Looking for a high quality cart, one that can be left outdoors for the whole season.

 

Nice! This was my 3rd year doing the coastal hunt here in Oregon and still haven't got one but seeing more sign every year so hopefully I can get it done next year. I have a .357 Marlin that I obviously don't use for elk but I love it and have really been thinking about getting a bigger caliber lever action for the coastal hunts. What size scope are you using? Its so thick around here I am also thinking about just going iron sights honestly.

 

I run a 2-7x32 red field scope. But will soon be replacing it with a Leupold 2.5-8x36.

You will want a scope. My bull this year was on the edge of a old clear cut. I could see elk but could not see a bull. With the scope I was able to find him and make a quick shot before he moved out of the small window that he was standing in. Trust me, 9 out of 10 times you only have a couple seconds to get a shot off before they slip out of that window.

I hunt the timber/brush. All my shots are under 60 yards. Match the gun to the grounds you hunt. I used to use big belted mags but when they are archery range, half the time the bullet is going so fast the elk didn't even know it was hit, and poor blood trails.
Now with a .458 diameter bullet at 1500-1900 fps, they know they are hit and you get a great blood trail.

 

A friend of mine got his first buck today and to top it off he got it with a muzzleloader.
