Anybody had any luck south of Cle Elum for deer or elk? Saw tons of sign, heard one bull in the distance, but didn't see any animals

I've never looked in that area but good you are seeing signs. I bought a gate key to Campbell Global land this year and will see what that's like. If it doesn't work out I'll have to harvest some firewood out of there to recover costs.

Not sure whether to pick east or west elk tag. I should be back there scouting today but football... and chores.

I figured east would be easier to get a cow and just get some good meat, figured finding a spike would be basically impossible. But I've been seeing a lot of success photos from the west side. Wish the season was just a little longer. 5 days for a cow is real fuckin short!

I've never got an elk before and only tried once. But I love the meat. I'm by myself more often than not. My cousin is a beast and goes solo every year and packs out his bull. You can see a couple of his recent pics here. That was at least a week ago in Colorado so was probably pretty warm, had to work fast.

I've not gotten an elk either, and was a little relieved to not get one while I was by myself, but if it had come to it I'd have packed it up and hoofed it out, slowly

In the San Juan Islands up in Washington but headed home to Southern Oregon on Thursday. Western Oregon Deer Rifle opening day is Saturday. Can’t wait to get out in the woods with my new lift and BFG’s. Weather cooled off and we’ve had significant rain so looking forward to a wet start with no fires for change!

anyone pay for the W. WA Pheasant program? I did it again this year because there are two sites super close to my home. If anyone wants to join up, I'd be happy to have the company this weekend for the opener.

If anybody wants to meet for bear/cougar somentime in 454 or 460, I wouldnt mind the company going after those critters. I've haven't killed any large game animal yet, but after trying a buddies spring bear I would really like to get one in the freezer.

last minute check on my two hunting rifles at the range today. My 30.06 has such a nicer trigger than the old 30-30. But significantly more recoil and it's overkill for short shots in the woods.

@Wyckedan let me know if you end up around Cle Elum. I'm curious how crowded it gets. Taking the week of the 14th off and then figure out other vacation days after that.

It's not terrible. I used to hunt up french cabin Creek for 3 or so years. Saw more elk that deer, and I've never tagged a deer in that area.

I'll probably head back that way looking for mule deer, then for late season archery elk. I've got a multi season deer and a second tag for Whidbey which opens in 2 weeks. When I decide to go back to Clear Elum I'll let you know
