Was in a spot I think looks good today. Fresh tracks and droppings. Trees and brush not too thick. Didn't see any deer though, just grouse. I can see the plants the deer are eating. Then there was these truck hunters that kept driving around really slow over and over. I was only out half a day.

@bobsuruncle 262 yards and a lot of elevation. Probably the same doe's from your pic. Not sure how much hold over I'd need if a buck came out. Picture doesn't show it but that's a steep hike.

LESS hold over when shooting uphill or downhill!!! How much angle (use your phone) and what is your cartridge? Doing a quick ballistic calc on a 165 grain 308 bullet at 100 yard zero, the hold over difference between 0* (10.68" drop) and 20* (9.73" drop, LESS) is -0.95" at 262 yards. At 40* down angle, the difference is just over -4" (6.28" of total drop, LESS)

Anybody got a lead on decent Upland not too terribly far from Portland? Trekked around White River Unit a ton today and didnt find anything but a ton of ground squirrel and a merganser on one of the ponds. Was beautiful out and got a ton of nice rose hips and some mushrooms on way back over the hill but definitely wish there were some birds to show for effort.

Am I missing something on Sauvie for quail? Having a serious hankering for some other-than-duck winged species. Have a dog but not a pointer so hes kinda worthless outside the duck blind.

uphill. very steep uphill. I'll check angle next time. 30.06 Barnes VOR-TX. Calc says 6" at 21 degrees. A better spot though would be at that cable reel someone conveniently left half way up the hill. Also found a salt block someone put out there.

I should edit my post, because it is also LESS holdover for shooting uphill too! Seems counterintuitive that it is less regardless of up or down.....

On the Vor-TX, which bullet weight? My ballistics app has 150, 168 and 180 pre-loaded.....

I don't know much about bullet ballistics, but with archery you calculate the horizontal distance to the target. Line of sight plays zero impact on arrow drop, just how horizontally far away it is. An arrow 20 yards away on flat ground and 20 yards AND 20 yards up still the same pin. Are bullets the same?

Yeah you could say it's steep. This is what it was like before they put a diversion pipe in there. You could see the scar on the hillside from the ridge or when headed east on 90 between exit 25 and 27. Like every project on a mountain, they ran into solid Rock and called us in to drill and blast through it. To say my driller helper was scared would be an understatement. He didn't even want to go down/up there with me, lol. I almost lost that drill over the edge backwards. I would have probably gotten a newer one.

This is looking down that pipeline towards where you where when you took that picture.

Yes that is counter intuitive. I would have thought gravity would work against you more. Which app do you use? I've messed with ballistic calculators but never actually practiced uphill/downhill shooting. Here is what I got for 21 degree's as an example on a free app.

Barnes 150gr TTSX BT at 2970fps. G1 Ballistic Coefficient 0.42
21 degree angle up and 262 yards. My app says 6.57" holdover.
On level ground it says 7.64" holdover.

I found a good local taxidermist, dropped the kitteh off yesterday and Chris (owner) gave me a full tour and showed me the process which he uses. His wife drives a lifted tacoma and we got to BS'ing about trucks. Prices are competitive and the work i saw was top notch, he does everything from fish to wolves to elk.
