My trusty 2006 Tacoma 4.0L Automatic PreRunner has thrown it's first code and lit it's first check engine light in almost 18 years. The truck has about 153K on the odo. Spark plugs changed every 30K and oil changed like a clock every 4k or so since I bought it brand new in '06. No issues until today. The cheapo code reader I have gave me the code and cylinder 2 misfire mentioned above. Thoughts are appreciated. I'm going to pull the plug in cylinder 2 and take a look. Thanks

Pulled the plug (Denson K20HR-U11). It looks fine. The plugs were replaced at 150K.

Maybe clear the codes and see if it comes back. If it does, swap with another one and see if the code follows. If so, you have a bad coil.

Swap the coil to another cylinder and see if the code moves as well. I recently had a similar situation. Pulled the plug and it looked fine but it still ended up being the plug. Just because it looks fine doesnt mean it is

OK, thanks for the suggestions. I switched coils and still had the miss so I put a new plug in and voila, running smooth as a baby's butt. I wonder if it was just a bad plug or something made it go bad. Any thoughts? Now I'm wondering about the other 5 Denso's I put in at 150K. I'm thinking about rounding up some NGK's to replace the Denso's.

Denso plugs are usually good, but where did you buy those ones? There are counterfeits out there, especially on scamazon and fleabay.

Id replace them all. Thats what I did. I was also surprised the one went bad as I only had about 15k miles on them (although they were about 10 years old because the truck sits alot)

They could be fakes but if they are they are good ones. Seems like I did get them on Amazon, which I will not do in the future. I am going to replace them all and hopefully won't have any further issues. This is the plug I replaced. IMG_0292(1).jpg

Go to toyota to get them. I get all 6 of mine from my local dealer for like $24 I think. They are cheaper than the parts stores

I did go to my local Toyota dealer and picked up 6 new Denso's. When I pulled the first plug I compared the two side by side and could see variations in the printing on the plugs. It's darker on the dealer plug. Also on the dealer plug just above the threads, etched into the metal, is DENSO OG LD + + + + + + + + +. On the suspect plugs I pulled the etched metal reads DENSO JAPAN HN + + + + + + + +. The etching on the dealer plug is much deeper and easier to to read. Also noted is 9 + signs on the dealer plug and 8 + signs on the suspect plugs. So it looks like the plugs I pulled are fake. I can't figure out where I got them though. I went back through my purchase history on ebay and Amazon and can't find that I purchased them on either site. Lesson learned. I'm going to the dealer from here on out for plugs. BTW, the truck is running fine again.
