Looked in the owners manual and do not see what these are for? Looks like a 2x4 could be spanned across them for something? thanks

Maybe a 2x4 with a piece of plywood on top of it. Kinda like a shelf. :notsure:

I assumed they were for a 2x4 to support a wider load (like a sheet of plywood/drywall) that wouldn't fit between the wells, but I don't know for sure.

If you are talking about the 2 pockets directly above the wheel wells , they are exactly that , pockets .

If you are talking about the approx 1"x8" depressions in the bedsides just ahead and behind the wheel well , you are correct that a 2x6 can be cut and placed in them . This is useful when hauling sheet goods .

They make it super easy to pop out and clean the fender from behind, life saver in our rust environment here.

I keep tie downs in there. I have a cover so nobody can see them otherwise the pockets are about useless.

from what i've read, those pockets when removed are the holes for the robots at the factory to hold onto the bed for moving them around. they just insert the cubby's to fill in the holes after wards. i opted to utilize these to mount some $20.00 walmart foglights as bedlights. quick, easy, and functional.

Those are just cargo pockets , but you see the depression in the bedside to the right of the pocket in your picture ? This is where you can put a 2x6 side to side .

i have a friend who put airbags on her X, the only way they were able to lift the super heavy bed was through those pockets.
