nice video above. in my experience, which is 17 years of driving, legally, the whistler pro series has always worked for me. but like the video shows, if they're running instant on and you don't pick them up shooting other vehicles ahead of you then you're screwed. i was running 86 one day in a 70 and when i turned the curve he was behind some trees parked. nailed me, as soon as my radar went off i knew i was gotten. pulled over > got ticket. normally i drive 8-10 over, unless on a long trip and i'm ready to get there, then i'll push it a bit. i always though they gave you 8, i didn't know it was 13 as the officer above was giving people. if any cops would like to say that is normal, i'd be all ears.

but i don't know how many times that radar has saved me b/c they're running it open on the road and it picks up a ways off.

i don't think tint has anything to do with the radar or radar detectors, i've had tint in all my vehicles and never a problem.

Thats the thing after the first speed reading good radar detector would lock on the signal, pretty much 2 + miles radius. On flat roads that thing was can get readings from 5 + miles if the speed is tested on the car in front of radar.
Some are so sensitive that can pickup door openers from miles away (major inconvenience  )
The only problem is the LIDAR because, it has very low spread and its impossible to detect from long distance.
The quality of detector makes whole difference, and also how detector is mounted.
Funny my friend bought Cobra claiming there is nothing to quality of detectors. Got 3 tickets in one day :D and Cobra end up on the dump.

Can't blame the detector for your friend being an idiot. I've never run a detector and I've only gotten 2 tickets in 10 years. Coulda been none if I was paying better attention.

its called overconfidence. He expected radar detector to give him warning, it did when lights where flashing on his tail. :D Way to late.

I drove 20 years without a detector, got 1 speeding ticket. Bought a detector, and it was successful at avoiding tickets while driving too fast, most of the time, but a smart cop or a cop doing it the right way, unless you get lucky by picking up the signal from other vehicles being clocked, will nab you, all the detector does is tell you a little sooner that you have been nabbed. I got several tickets within a few years of getting the detector. Now I don't use the detector, I just keep it about 5 over the limit, no problems. The best avoidance is using your eyes, cheaper than a detector, just as useful, radar or laser can't see around corners or obstacles, if you can't see them they can't clock you, but a smart leo will still nab you sooner or later just by being in a place where you can't see him in time. If you wanna avoid tickets, don't try to go fast enough to get pulled over, or you will get them, you may avoid many but you will get nabbed. Plus it's (speeding) is dangerous to other people, and you have to drive way over the limit in order to gain any significant time. Not worth it. MO, with experience to back it up.

I give 10 mph, unless its in a spot where the speed drops by 10mph (speed trap area) then I give 15 mph. I know officers that wont give you anything though, but they use the speed only to pull you over and check for more serious things, not to write tickets.
