I think a lot of folks are stuck on reading skills 101....He said SCANNER...NOT RADAR DETECTOR.

    They are two different things.
They may or may not be legal in your area...and I don't care what the cops are saying- so I don't know anything about which ones are good or not...

What's with everyone bringing up radar detectors? lol. He's talking about a police scanner, as mentioned, which just picks up radio traffic for police, fire, rail, etc. I've had one in my home for years. It's a Radioshack one I got for around 100 bucks. Easy enough to grab and take along in the truck if I want to but it typically stays in the house. I typically use mine to monitor local fire dept activity. I agree with what someone said about getting one that uses a trunking system cause alot of departments are using those systems and you'll only be able to pick up that stuff it goes off a repeater system. Also it will be helpful to find a list of what frequencies are used in your area so you can program in the appropriate ones you'd like to listen into. Not sure about what to look at as far as mounting something in your truck, but I'd definitely take a look at what Radioshack has.

As far as legality, pretty sure you're always okay if it's in your home, however it may vary by state about having one in a vehicle.
