Poll: 3rd Gen wheels on 1st Gen Tacoma?

Discussion in '1st Gen. Tacomas (1995-2004)' started by nchiker1, Feb 21, 2021.

?

Should you slap 3rd gen wheels on a 1st gen given the chance?

  1. Absolutely. It's a great update that just makes for a sharp looking 1st gen.

  2. Nah. Don't overdo it, keep it classic with the originals.

I think we need an "I don't give a shit" option in the poll.

This is where I get 6-lug jealousy...

Wheels are interchangeable across all gens of T4R and 6-lug Taco, but not 5-lug Tacos!

    :annoyed:

The wheel spacing tucks them into the body more, not a great look imo and also makes you more prone to rubbing on slightly larger tires. Also I'm not a big fan of modern looking wheels on older vehicles but that's just me.

Best looking wheel on a 1st gen 4x4 is a black steelie imo

Mine came like this. I had to add spacers or it was rubbing the frame.

Agree. Although they are heavy, even with ‘skinny’ duratracs. And I’m still trying to figure out how to keep the spare under the bed. These are FJ 17” steelies and the center hub bore has notches (not perfectly round) so the stock spare tire ‘holder’ doesn’t hold it in place.

I put the same wheels hogeyphenogey has on my '04 with stock suspension. No spacers or rubbing.

I have a set I've used on both my 95 trucks at one time or another. I like the look of this set.

Currently they are on the silver one(sorry, pic not so good), but I used to have them on the green one.

Most likely tire size or suspension setup. Mines all stock so no issues. I measured mine both before and after switching wheels and tires, the new ones were slightly closer to the frame. Maybe a 1/4" not enough to see with the naked eye.

BTW, with the stock 3rd gen 245x75x16 tires that were on them, there's no rubbing with these wheels.

My green truck is my Winter go to veh, so it gets ATs in November on factory 1st gen steels. The 3rd gen stock Firestones LE2's are fine on the silver truck. I don't want to expose it to salt, so it stays parked when roads are slick/nasty, otherwise, those Firestones wouldn't be usable in Winter. Zero traction in snow, so as far as how much to pay for a set of 3rd gens, I was able to justify that I will get use out of those stock tires. They had under 10,000 miles (looked like new) when the guy removed them from his 3rd gen.

The black/silver look of some of the 3rd gen wheels just isn't for me, plus there's the issue with the backspacing. My 32's rubbed with the stock 1st gen alloy wheels, so having even less backspacing is a non-starter for me.

Some of the TRD Pro wheels look pretty good like the matte black 6 spokes, but are honestly way overpriced for what you get, as are most TRD branded things. But they look good for the gram.

I'm much more of a function over form kinda guy. For 1/3 the cost, you can get yourself some Pro Comp steelies that you won't care if you scratch on some rocks.

Looks so good on the 4x4 Tacomas though, I actually think they look great on the newer Tacomas too.

    I just like steelies lol
