09 w/ 13K and mine does it. I feel the noise while perhaps normal on 08 & 09's is certainly not acceptable for a Toyota Product.:( I also feel the noise is associated with the gear whine in 1st gear and difficulty in downshifting from 2nd to 1st.

If it makes you guys feel any better, I noticed today that mine does it as well. I noticed it in a drive thru. Clutch to floor goes away clutch up comes back. Did it with AC on. Don't recall hearing it with the AC off.

My 350Z makes the same noise AC on or off (not always and sometimes louder than others) and it is totally normal as all the 6 speeds do it. The Z if you rev it a little it goes away. If you press the clutch it goes away.

I wouldn't worry too much about the noise. If it breaks warranty it. You can hear all kinds of potentially scary noises parked close to a wall. That's why I turn the music up sometimes. If I can only hear it next to a wall I don't worry about them too much.

I took the truck wheeling for the first time today and heard all kinds of niffty noises LOL. Revtek offroad = fail. Talk about a harsh ride OMG.

Mine is 05 4 cyl 5 speed with about 65k on it. It does the diesel noise too especially with the AC on idling. I'm gonna go with underengineered shaft & wear from throwout bearing sliding on it causing this. New throwout bearing will not fix it. Only new shaft will. IIRC, the shaft is part of the bell housing on these trucks & is expensive piece. May be why they just said fuck it & replaced the whole tranny. I have had rear main replaced according to dealership when I took it in for leak from bell housing but who knows, they could've replaced the front seal on the gearbox & just not said anything. The leak did appear to be engine oil, not gear oil tho. Luckily I have 7yr/100k drivetrain warranty so they will have to deal with the rattling at some point.

Mine does this, sound like ordinary gear rattle, not worth worrying about. As Toyota makes the truck quieter, mechanical noises stand out a little more....

Not sure, but I think the shaft is not part of the bell housing on the 5 speed but is on the 6 speed. In any event, if "underengineered", as you put it, then replacing whatever with the same part won't cure the issue, unless the part has been redesigned or upgraded. Again, I'm still not sure that it is a defect as opposed to just a noise issue.

Poll Synopsis: I am attempting a synopsis of this poll, including my other thread referenced in the original post. I counted 26- 2nd Generation 4 cyl. 5 speeds, all of which, except 1 (CometKat 08 4x4), say they have the noise that goes away with clutch pedal depressed and comes back with it up. Here's the summary:

    1. Terrier: 2008 , 13k mi. 4x4
    2. 08pretaco: 2008, Prerunner
    3. hedlesbrmstkbass:2008, 12k mi. 4x2
    4. jrsmokestacks:2008, 4x4 noise gone at 53k mi.

    9. Fast1: 2006 4x4
    10. UA34: 2008, prerunner
    11. Knot Guilty: 2009 4x4, noticed within 3 months of purchase; transmission replaced at 5k miles and now has 10k and no noise since replacement.

    13. Chad68: 2009, 4x4

    16. jiles111: 2009 4x4
    17. uood8: 2009 , 4x4, noticed when new; now 3k mi.
    18. ttylerr: 2009, 4x4
    19. InfidelTaco: 2005, prerunner
    20. GoBlueFan: 2008, prerunner
    21. jasper07: 2009, 4x4; replaced input shaft bearing (total disassembly of trans) and nothing changed.
    22. 08beachtoy: 2008, 4x4
    23. ninja taco: 2008, 4x4; throw out bearing replaced and noise came back; then bearings in transmssion were replaced and noise went away
    24. hans2: 2009, 3k mi.; replaced throw out bearing and noise came back next day. Rattle has now advanced to where it is noticable out of gear while coasting to a stop.

Okay, today I was in the "big city" over 200 miles from me. I went to a dealership there. The tech and I listened to the noise that I described above come and go as I manipulated the clutch (a/c on), and he said it was a normal noise characteristic of this type of truck. He said he has had a number of people come in with a question on this. They basically all do it, he said.

He said it is an inherent noise that has something to do with the clutch that goes away when you press on the clutch pedal. His opinion is that it is not any kind of mechanical problem.

If you have any concerns, then have your Toyota Tech check it out. After all, we may not all be talking about the exact same noise or degree of noise.

am having the same exact issues as everyone here, bought my 07 4x4 2.7 with 37k on the clock 7/4/09, completely silent, fast forward to this summer, when the AC came back into play I started hearing the noise, very pronounced, I now have 77k miles(I drive a lot).

I had the truck into two dealers, the first wanted 1k just to rip it apart and look, even under extracare warranty, then I took it to another dealer(trusted friend service writer at this dealer) they agreed it didn't sound like a throw out bearing at first, once they took it apart they concluded it was the throw out, so I paid to have the complete clutch treatment, disk, bearing etc. This also included a full flush of the tranny........

Noise came back IMMEDIATELY after a real drive(more than 30 miles) so it's going back to the dealer with a copy of this thread on the passenger seat. I will keep everyone posted.

Luckily I have the Extra Care warranty.

Mine does the same thing. Has ever since I bought it new in Apr. 2005. I just make it a point to keep the clutch pressed in when stopped or the AC off.

My 07 5sp 2.7 does it. 70k miles, and it's definitely more pronouced with the AC on. It goes away when the clutch is in, and only seems to occur at certain engine speeds.

Looks like I might be getting a new trans, I brought the truck home, they are opening a case with Toyota and recommending replacement, so we'll see. I'll keep everyone updated.

    Just wait!
2010 4X4, dealer said it was "gear noise" and that they all make this noise. Mine does it w/ AC on and goes away once you turn AC off, or depress the clutch. I'm interested to see if anyone that had the problem that had repairs made, if the sound was gone after the service.

Every manual transmission vehicle I have owned, motorcycles included, have rattled when idleing in neutral, with the clutch pedal or lever released. Have only noticed it on the Taco when it is fully warmed after a long trip and you sit at a drive-thru. My guess is the noise is a combination of the throwout bearing and maybe the flywheel doing a little dance. Have only heard the rattle about 5 times.

My 20 year old BMW motorcycle which has a dry clutch like a 4 wheel vehicle, has rattled under these conditions since new, and still running fine on the original clutch and transmission.
