I've never driven a manual trans Colorado or Canyon although wonder if the transmissions are completely interchangeable with the Tacoma. Do you have a chart of the gear ratios for the GM version? I'm wondering if the cases are different.......My guess is a good trans shop should be able to disassemble the Tacoma trans and re-shim to tighter tolerances to produce a quieter unit.

[/quoteThe Colorado does use the same 5 speed as the Tacoma, but the gear ratios are different. I work at a Chevy dealer and I've never sold a single part to one of these transmissions other than gear oil. I don't know why the Tacomas have the noise issue and the Colorados don't.[/quote]

I also have the same noise, but I have an actual scientific theory of what is causing this unruly commotion in the rear of my truck.
I believe that Glen Beck has been depositing gold bullion shavings into my transfer case when my truck is parked at home and I'm sound asleep.

I dropped my truck off last night at the dealership so they can take a look at it. The sevice guy said that he's had multiple similar trucks in the past few weeks with the exact issue, and that 'Toyota doesn't know how to fix it'.

i cant believe i didnt come across this thread sooner. i assumed it was a rattle coming from a heat shield or something. my 05 4x4 just started doing this this summer, started becoming more noticeable id say may or june. right now i got 61750 miles on mine. im gonna hope its just normal gear noise as i am now out of warranty. figures it starts making the noise just as i am out of the 60K mile powertrain warranty. dammit...

DCH Toyota in Wappingers Falls NY now has my truck. They dropped the entire transmission and are ordering a new fork and some "bearings." That is all I know for now. It might be ready on Thursday. We'll see.

I also came across a bunch of information about "neutral turnover rattle." Google the term. VERY interesting. It makes me think that this may be "normal" (but annoying) and my Toyota guy is doing nothing but guessing.

    Carp

Neutral rollover rattle has the same
characteristics as gear rattle except rollover
occurs with the engine idling, transaxle in
NEUTRAL and the clutch engaged. The rollover
noise intensity increases with transaxle operating
temperature and engine torque load resulting
from engine driven accessories (air conditioning
and alternator). Gear rollover noise is inherent in
manual transaxles and is not detrimental to the
engine or transaxle. However, in vehicles where
the engine idling speed is below specification or
rough, the rollover noise can deteriorate to a level
where a harsh clattering noise similar to loose
parts in the transaxle will become audible.
Replacement of transaxle components will NOT
    correct this condition.
    3. Gear rollover noise, caused by engine torsional
vibrations, and clutch release bearing noise are
sometimes mistaken for bearing noise. Gear
rollover noise will disappear when the transaxle is
engaged in gear. Due to a constant running
release bearing noise caused by a worn or
damaged release bearing will be noticeable only
when the clutch is disengaged. When complaints
of this nature are encountered, it will be
necessary to check the vehicle to determine if
bearing noise exists. Transaxle servicing will not
eliminate gear rollover noise or clutch release
    bearing noise.

Even though I have extracare, and paid for one tear down where they blamed it on the throw out bearing and I paid out of pocket for a full clutch and bearing replacement. The noise never went away and now I have to pay for another tear down out of pocket for them to check again.

I'm not happy one bit, I called and opened a case to toyota corporate, they say there isn't anything they can do.

Well... You might be able to add mine to the list as the first 1 gen to be doing it. Can someone make a video of it for everyone else's comparison? Mine only does it with the A/C on and it was kinda funny even before I saw this thread i was like man this sounds like a diesel... I'll try to get a vid of mine tomorrow. It also stops if the AC is off or i push the clutch in.

i checked mine last night to see if the noise changes with the clutch. the noise stops as i depress the clutch, then it comes right back as i let the clutch back out. so its safe to say mine is doing exactly what is described in this thread.

I just picked up my truck from Toyota. To quote the report from Toyota. "DRIVEN ON AN EXTENSIVE ROADTEST, NO ABNORMAL NOISE HEARD AT THIS TIME." I drove home about 25 miles at highway speed with the a/c running. I got out of my truck, left it running and in neutral. When I got out and listened the noise was STILL there. ALL work was completed under warranty. I cost me nothing but time. I am left to conclude this noise is inherenent and likely "Neutral rollover rattle/Gear rollover noise." Nothing can be done. Unless somebody else gets another dealer to actually fix this, there is NO way I am going back!

The report stated the following items were replaced:

    CUTCH COVER SUB ASSEMBLY R&R
    FORK SUB-ASSY.
    DISC ASSY.
    COVER. ASSY
    RAD B-BRG CLTCH REL.
    BEARING ASSY.
    SUPPORT RELEASE FOR.
    BEARING RADIAL BALL

I like my new clutch. It feels better. But NOTHING else changed. Yeah Toyota quality!

i believe it is normal. I met a guy in an 05 prerunner with 340k on the odo (work truck) his does it, did it from day one. never had anything close to a failure.

My father, a mechanical engineer and machinist instructor, mentioned this rollover but i thought he was full of shit... maybe more to it then i gave him credit for.

I noticed last night that if i'm under 2000 rpm and on the throttle, i can hear the diesel sound just like at idle. after that, the sound either disappears or i cant hear it over the truck. still shifts and runs just as good as ever, just new noises like this worry me sometimes. related problem? i know in this thread it was basically discussed how this noise is at idle but i noticed mine at lower rpms now.

It's becoming apparent that this noise is just the nature of the beast and, though annoying, is not hurting anything at all and will not shorten the life of the tranny. I think there's a much higher probability that the "techs" <rolleyes> at my dealership will screw something up worse if I let them work on it than if I just live with it - so I think I'm just going to do that. It drives and shifts great - better than when new - so I'm just going to relax and forget about this thread.

My 09 4x4 2.7L makes the same exact noise (5000 miles). Not really noticeable on a cold engine but after a long drive the noise is very distinguishable. Sounds like a dry clutch on a Ducati.

Haven't taken it to the dealer yet but I imagine they will just say its normal. If its not broken don't fix it etc...
