Yes. Get someone to push the clutch pedal in while you record with the A/C on - and you'll hear it go away.

yeah i have the same problem in my '96 2.7L manual trans. my tech said its the timing chain hitting the timing cover. when the rpm increase the tension on the chain increases also, which pulls the chain tighter so it doesn't hit the cover. that's why it goes away when the rpm increase.

Just because the purring is louder than the truck does not mean the problem is fixed:p

Ive def got that sound going on... sounds like the pressure plate. More noticable with the A/C on for sure... also sound goes away when the clutch is pushed in, so its certainly the clutch.

I will be putting this oil; http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=44&pcid=8 in my 5speed, yes it makes the noise described.

I put this oil in my friend's 6speed in his 02 Sentra 2.5L and it improved shifting by 110%...

This IS gear noise! This noise has NOTHING to do with clutch, flywheel or bell housing assembly. The noise (well on my truck) is there only at idle and when the truck is fully warmed up. When the truck is cold gear oil is thick dampening the sound better, when gear oil gets hot, it gets thinner and its sound dampening capabilities go away resulting in gear noise.

Also remember that most transmissions are made out of aluminum which is like the holy grail for car manufacturers. Aluminum is complete shit in my opinion, it is weak and it transfers sound much more than steel or iron, resulting in all those little noises we hear from the modern gearboxes & engines.

You're right about the gear noise. I'm a bit old school and the old C.I. units were a lot quieter.
This might sound unusual although I wonder if a product like Line-X applied to the trans case would quiet things down a bit.....??

Let us know on the Redline....I think it might help w/ shifting although hesitant about it quieting things down on this trans. FWIW

'06 2.7L 5speed and I've got the exact same thing. At idle in neutral with a warm transmission, the "loose gears" noise is prevalent, but goes away when the clutch is depressed. I'm planning to replace the trans fluid with Redline MT-90 within the next day or two because of this, plus the notchy shifting, and the slightly audible whining/buzzing when I let off the gas at higher speeds in 4th & 5th gear. I'm hoping that the fact that it's full synthetic might quiet things down a bit.

I don't think that this is a problem more critical than an annoyance. My '07 VW GTI did the same thing only much louder and less deep, and it didn't have the bigger gears that this truck has.

It is normal, no real fix. Every manual transmission vehicle I have owned in the last 40 years has done this to some extent, even my motorcycles.

Sorry to bump this thread but I am trying to look into this problem as well. I just bought a 2006 double cab TRD with the 6 speed manual transmission. The only time it makes the rattle sound is when I am first starting up. And it is VERY faint. This same thing used to happen in my dads saturn.

The only reason I care is because my truck is certified used and comes with the 12 month bumper to bumper warranty so I was wondering if they would do anything to fix it. It seems like this noise really doesnt matter much.

    Thoughts?

If there is a TSB on something does it mean they have to fix it for free?

future plan of 2" drop and any type of rim thats not a steelie. grille and BHLM mods, maybe....
my 2010 does it too, its the TOB not the gears. when you press the clutch in, youre applying pressure to the TOB and any slack in the bearing is decreased and the noise magically goes away. 20 year of ASE mechanics, my Isuzus, wifes 03 Lancer did it....once the bearing lube wears out (lube from assembly) the tolerances diminish and you get free play in the bearing. the a/c on, the lancers also got louder. 72k miles, did it from new, just like my tacoma (yes the wife drives a manual). unless its chirping/grinding/squeaking the bearing is moving freely. its when you press in the clutch and it grinds or you feel it in the pedal, id start to be concerned. thats when you know the bearing is DRY and self destructing. there is also an issue with the TOB not fully releasing and the clutch slipping out there. from what i read the pressure plate is too weak and heats up and slips not the TOB. i wouldnt worry about it, just the noise from a new truck can be disheartening....
