    Chris, all the respect to you. I understand your assessment however, according to this poll and my real world experience, There are late model 1GR engines that are silky smooth and have no ticking.

    My gripe is this... I want one 25% that are quiet. I didn't pay $30k for a ticking machine.

    Maybe I need to post some video of mine ticking. You can be 20 feet away and still hear tick, tick, tick, tick.

    I would gamble that the people who say their trucks dont have the tick, simply cant hear it due to their ears not able to hear the frequency, or it begins to tick when they are in the truck driving. I have yet to hear a 1GR thats silent. sometimes the tick isnt as noticable, or may be quiet for the time being, but they all tick at some point.

    My 2009 v6 has no tick at all. Now my old 2000 4 banger ticked like crazy, but never gave me any problems.

    I think I have the regular valve train tick , but don't really notice. I do notice a different tick above 50mph. It seems to change with speed, not RPM's. Doesn't matter what gear I'm in, but can't hear it under 50. Anybody got any ideas what it is? Does anyone else have it? Dealer told me they didn't notice any abnormal noises.

    You guys with the tick, just need to upgrade to louder, more agressive tires.:p

    I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
    My Taco used to tick like crazy, i could hear it over engine and outside the car. Thing that I did for the filter killed tick, I can reproduce it by removing mesh from the airbox (tick) and putting it back (no tick). So its not like I can not hear it. Its just no longer there :)

    (Bullwinkle J Moose climbs up onto soapbox.)

    OK, here's my beef about this.

    Now, we all drive *trucks* right? Historically, trucks are different from *cars.* They're supposed to be simpler, less expensive, more durable, and haul more stuff.

    Now, manufacturers listen to the "squeaky wheel." The squeaky wheel gets the grease, as they say. And the more we gripe about rough ride and ticking noise, the more the more manufacturers like Toyota will produce "carified" trucks: More expensive, more complex, less durable.

    In this case, they'll examine a few ticking trucks, find the valve bucket adjustment in spec but away from some perfect "non ticking" condition, and proceed to spend engineering time and money on finding a solution which might involve e.g.

    * Even more sound deadening in the cab.

    * Sound dampers somewhere in the engine.

    * Tightening down the tolerances even more. (make no mistake - this costs money too)

    * <insert your own esoteric solution here>

    All of which takes time and attention and money away from some of the basic *TRUCK* problems they SHOULD be solving like, oh, say

    * the frame rust issue.

    * 6 sp throwout bearing

    * Tailgates that bend under load

    * leaf springs that can't carry truck's stated load capacity.

    This kind of thing just helps convince Toyota (as if they needed more convincing) that what truck buyers really want is just oversized luxury cars, and they'll happily address this perceived need by continuing to do things like softening the suspension at the expense of load carrying capacity.

    If there's a durability problem, yeah, let's raise holy heck with Toyota and make 'em fix it. But if the "problem" is that our trucks aren't enough like cars, well, maybe we just need to adjust our expectations. Dang Tacos are expensive enough already.

    my tacoma has a tick audible in the cab during HARD acceleration (before the truck downshifts) between 1500-2500 RPM. Sounds like a small exhaust leak.

    The other existing tick is when it's cold, the plastic valve on the left side of engine ticks and can be heard only from outside.

    First one can't be fixed, second one I think there is a fix here for it

    So those are the TWO tacoma ticks.

    Yes but so what. I had a 5-cylinder overhead cam Acura Vigor that had a worst ticking sound. It just doesn't bother me.

    When the engine is warm, mine ticks pretty bad while idling (heard from the outside). Actually thought that the engine was gonna crap out on me before I found out that this was common. FWIW, my 98 4Runner with the 3.4 does NOT tick at all, while my dad's 95 T100, also with the 3.4, ticks even WORSE than my Taco. :confused:

    The original engine in mine made no ticking what so ever. This "new" engine does.

    Mine tic's when its cold, hot, sunny, raining and cloudy with a chance of meatballs. I can hear it from the cab, from the outside and especially when I'm near a wall with the windows down (aka McDonald's drive through). I've gotten used to it. If the engine is reliable the damn thing can sound like Gilbert Gottfried and I'll be happy.

    My 2011 has no noticeable tick at this time but my 2007 Tundra started ticking from the first week. I have had drive through cashiers tell me to turn the truck off thinking it was a diesel...All that being said I put 138,000 miles on the truck and never brought it to the dealer for any problems..
