Yes, mine ticks. But no so much when I used 93 octane gas. Just my observation.

Its the most common vehicle in hawaii.. there's 4-5 fjs and 10 tacomas per block. They all sound exactly the same.. cept fot the people that put the stupid exhaust cans on them.. (its bad enough to put a "magnaflow" on a bad sounding v6.. but then on an automatic? Come on.. you sound like a wildebeest not a mustang)

They all tick.. If yours doesn't tick its because it ticks so much it sounds like clatter or you should have used ear plugs in the shop when you were younger.

Its not spark knock, so don't imagine you're using high octane does anything. If that's the case, your car is broken and needs some timing work.

If you think its just your toyota or just your tacoma its because you don't drive many vehicles. there are other cars that make tons of noise. You just are closer to yours.

Stand next to an idling corvette some time.. they sound like a textile mill.

    Hello From Down Under

Must say enjoy reading your forums great site. Toyota have released this engine 1GR-FE V6 in many models around the world.I have 2 Toyota Prado's with the same engine and drive train as the FJ Cruiser and your 2nd Gen Tacomas and here too we have the ticking noise which has been tracked back to the extractors. The design of the extractors which is on The 1GR-FE engine dates back to the late 1940's. Some owners have replaced the stock extractors with aftermarket ones. I believe the modification eliminates some of the ticking noise while giving some improvement to performance.
Have attached a couple of links from forums here in Australia which maybe of some interest/help addressing the ticking issue.
