    I want to re-vote on this. I put down that it did tick with this new(er) engine, but it actually doesn't.

    yeah, my 09 with 17k on the clock sounds about as bad as the 2.9L in my '87 Ranger after 100k, but it ran another 40k like that before I sold it

    I've had vehicles with mechanical lifters and adjustable rockers before. My 4.0 just sounds like an engine to me. Some engines (quieter ones) sound like a sewing machine to me.

    I'd rather have an engine in my truck than a sewing machine.

    I may have missed it in here but I see no mention of fuel injectors. Many of you may be hearing the metering of the injectors as they open and close. very common in every injected motor.

    Um.. K&N so far... sorry my bad.
    My 07 4.0L sounds like valve train ticking under load. tossed in some z-max last oil change. now less to no ticking.

    Well, well, well, sounds like a bunch of ticking cry babies on here.:p Get you a supercharger and listen to it rattle. It sounds like something is about to fly apart when the truck is idling.
    Before I got the sc, I never noticed the truck making any unusual noises.
    But after the sc was installed, the rattle stands out.

    Here's what I did to get rid of the tick, you only need to do it once or twice then start using a high quality oil;
    if you change your oil at 5,000 miles then when you hit 4,000 miles dump about a quart of oil out and replace it with transmission fluid. That's right! dump one quart of tranny oil into your engine and drive it for a thousand miles then dump it all and replace it with your regular oil-whatever you use. I use Mobil 1 and havent had any more ticks. It started out because I was busy and going to one of those quick lube places-horrible!
    Or you can change your oil and just use one quart tranny fluid then change it again after a thousand miles
    Talk to any professional mechanic and they've all got their favorite secrets for getting rid of a ticky lifter.

    I have a better idea... Why doesn't Toyota take a look at QUALITY CONTROL? I have a feeling they are installing the cam and having to button everything down to verify the tolerances on the cam to bucket clearance. Sounds like we have some lazy engine builders out there. Heck maybe it's automated... I don't know just my hunch.
    It's the only logical explanation as to why such a large percentage have the valve train tick while others don't.
    Also, It amazes me how so many of you can be so accepting of a tapping valve train. We're into the second decade of the 21st century. We have the technology to make an engine that performs well without the need for sloppy tolerances. So you like the tapping, clicking, ticking... maybe squeaks, rattles and clunks wouldn't bother you either but it is annoying me! No disrespect to anyone! Just my feelings on the matter.

    My Tacoma ticks on the drivers side. It's not noticeable inside the cab. This truck drive's beautifully and always has. It doesnt bother me in the slightest. My buddy who has a chevy always points out how loud the fan is upon startup! I don't even notice it, but hey I drive a tractor trailer all day everyday. So this thing drives like a caddy compared to it!
