One of you 3rd gen owners ought to send in an oil analysis to Blackstone at your first 10k just to see what they say. You would be doing a lot of future owners a big favor and settle the question of whether it's too long or not.

How are you marking the filter cartridge to confirm? I can see taping the cap to see if that was broken, but still no confirmation on a oil/filter change.

My dealership says my 2016 Taco needs oil change every 10,000 miles with synthetic 0w20 oil, regular service every 5,000 miles. So they do NOT pay for oil change every 5000; only at 10,000 and 20,000 miles: I have to pay for the extra oil change every 5,000 miles. They cover the service EVERY 5,000, but not oil change. Toyotacare is 2 years or 25,000 miles; so Toyota only pays for "2" oil changes.

I have the TRD OR 4X4 AUTO; there may be different packages available, but Factory ToyotaCare only covers "2" oil changes on mine.

Here is the ToyotaCare brochure; Note the oil change is only at 10,000 and 20,000 miles. So ToyotaCare ONLY pays for "2" oil changes, it does cover regular service every 5,000 miles too.

I paid $70.00 for my oil change. I am at 8300 miles in less than 3 months. For me it is a piece of mind and good service practice every 5,000 miles. As previously stated mine DEFINITELY was dirty at the 5,000 mile mark. My last 2 vehicles got regular oil changes at 3,000 miles and both are over 200,000 miles. And for what it is worth I am a semi retired journeyman mechanic, whose career was working mostly on engines. I worked on dealership and fleet vehicles for over 25 years; frequent oil changes allow engines to last longer..... Period. With that said I am NO expert on the new 0w20 synthetic oil. I used synthetic Royal Purple 10w30 in my race cars for over 20 years, and never had any problems.

My suggestion: If you are not keeping your Taco for over 2 years or you are leasing; the 10,000 mile oil change will be fine, but if you are planning to keep it longer, the 5000 mile would be the safest. Remember the oil doesn't just lube the bearings, it lubes all the seals, valves, tappets, etc. the dirtier grittier the oil the more the wear on all the components.

Don't believe me? Brush your teeth and spit in a cup, then use that cup and contents the next time you brush; now that is how your engine feels without clean oil ... LOL

(Disclaimer: newbies please do not put toothpaste in your engine ... it was an analogy)

    :D

It depends on your dealership if they want to just do 2 oil changes before the 2 year/25,000 miles expires. Not all dealerships are like the one you bought your truck from. My dealership is going to change mine once a year because it would take me several years to reach 5,000 miles. Yes my dealer said 5,000 not 10,000. See what I mean by all dealers not being the same.

Will have to remove skid plate to mark the filter. If you're doing that, might as well change yourself. May be easier to mark a skid plate bolt. Anybody come up with a good way yet.

Maybe a sharpie line on the bolt and right next to it on the panel, if the line doesn't match up they most likely removed the skid plate. Although, if you're sleezy enough to not change the filter, you probably look for this kind of stuff.

Yes, I totally agree, I believe each dealership offers their own packages; obviously some better than others.

Less than 5000 miles a year .... wow... I guess I am a driving fool. I will do 5000 miles this summer just on my trip from Texas to Alaska and back. I love to drive and see the country. We shall see how my Taco plays in the rockies.

Dealership will only do things that Toyota will reimburse them for. If your vehicle manual says 10k mile oil changes, you will not get a free oil changes every 5k miles, because then the stealership has to pay out of pocket. That will never happen. I have seen zero people report they will get 5 free oil changes.

Instead, think of it as 5 services that you will receive.

You get a total of 5 services (3rd gen)
    1) tire rotation
    2) tire rotation, oil change
    3) tire rotation
    4) tire rotation, oil change
    5) tire rotation

Dealership told me I can "skip" my 1st service and go directly to 2nd service if I wanted free oil change but then the 1st is forfeit because they can't go backwards. That's how honorable they are. That's what they will do for you also. Miles and time are irrelevant. You can go get these 5 services 5 days in a row if you want and you will use them all up in 5 days. When people talk about 5k mile service, they are expecting what 2nd gen Tacoma had which is totally different, not just pure mileage, but literally having 5 oil changes where we only get 2. They are not doing you any favors what so ever. If I were you, I'd go by 6month rule since you don't drive much.

You get a total of 5 services (2nd gen)
    1) tire rotation, oil change
    2) tire rotation, oil change
    3) tire rotation, oil change
    4) tire rotation, oil change
    5) tire rotation, oil change

Yeah I probably won't have 2,000 miles on my truck in 1 year. I'm not an important person and I don't have no place to go or think I need to go so my truck sits in it's parking space 5 days a week.

I Wouldn't worry about metal shavings traveling through the block, I'm pretty sure the industry standard is all parts are air blown and then water jetted with de-ionized water. Then everything gets checked again for assembly. Also I don't think manufactures use that "break in oil" any more. It was a special blend of what I believe was a mineral oil that they wanted you to run for so many miles while the engine breaks itself in. This is why people would always want to do early first oil changes, and back in the day the manufacturing process probably consisted of a guy at the powertrain plant, with an air hose lightly blowing the shaving out of the block and components possible missing a few. Now it's all done by machine, then possibly again by a human doing a visible inspection. While I do still feel 10k is quite a spread on the oil change there is no doubt in my mind modern synthetic oils are more than durable to achieve this. My issue lies with the oil filters.

So in a few months if I buy the new Tacoma or any other truck that recommends a 10k interval oil change I'll be changing the oil filter and doing a tire rotation every 5k. Then topping off the oil that was lost changing the filter.

    That was hilarious!

However It's the opposite way around with the toothpaste. It's grittier at first then will get smoother as it wears and breaks down.... Well depending on the brand and type lol

I spelled it Like I see it and experienced it, Peoples Republic of Kalifornia. Bugs me that these States with Socialist tendencies (yet Homeless is a state of emergency) muck up their own tax systems, overtaxed Water systems, trash systems, and they ORDER the people to live a certain way and make them feel special about it, and THEN want to tell the rest of us how to live when we don't have any of the issues Those places tend to have. Yeah "one can snow ski and surf" in the same day in some areas......but who does that and will the traffic allow it?

Its the last part I take issue with. We don't have emissions testing. We don't NEED emissions testing. We don't have to recycle...... Waste Management hires people to do that on a waste assembly line. We don't pay thousands in property taxes yet we have exactly the same services and modern police and fire equipment. Pot holes are filled within days here. Of course our officers, teachers and fire are not union and live well on $35K a year. Keeps taxes low. Schools are not as bad as the many inner city schools.

People want to live amongst concrete and steel in noise and traffic so they can have 65 degree weather all year round (only at or near the beaches) Inland in El Cajon its pure desert.. That was boring I prefer a change of season without snow. I like HOT Summers. Yes we need a jacket in January.......oh well.

I never understood why many people built their homes on stilts in Mission Valley and along the coast over dry brush in flash fire, landslide and earthquake country....SMART? They are going to tell the rest of the country how to live. Paying over $1 more for fuel? Most of it in taxes.

Rant Over.....LOL i do give Kudos to the people who bought our home in 07......I hope they see daylight soon with the mortgage.

I changed my oil 1k miles after I did my rebuild, just in case of metal shavings or anything that lay have been in there. I think it's a good idea.

I changed mine at 2300, and found a lot of glitter in my oil filter canister. Sprayed it out clean with carb cleaner.
