Pretty sure we established that the aftermarket filter the guy installed didn’t cause the problem. Point number one was that while it most likely didn’t cause the problem, the dealer can, and seems to be pointing the finger at the non oem filter/negligence. Point 2 was whether or not a “high performance high flow” air filter was even worth sacrificing the micron level. I’m willing to lift and maybe change suspension components due to premature failure, I’m not willing to tear down an engine or buy a new one because aftermarket filtration didn’t filter as well in exchange for more flow that my engine didn’t even need. I doubt it would happen. But why even.

So you just described your self that the engine damage was human error! Not the filter type, make, or quality level!

Proving that no matter what filter that is used, if it is not installed or maintained properly, that it's not about who makes the filter.

I present the question of proof that the after market filters ruin an engine at anytime?
Please provide documentation to prove that statement.
You have to have some proof?

All I know is I can't count the times someone on this site complained about their after market filter causing codes or drivability issues.

I've never heard anyone with a factory filter complaining about the same issues.

This is a good post, glad to see it, but hey- what happened to the “aftermarket filter guy” post, anyways?

I’m one of those who may have been harmed by a oiled air filter - MAF burned out. I never had a similar issue with a stock filter. Once was enough, don’t care to experiment with multiple trials.

Got too hot of a topic? Understandable, there’s a lot of differences of opinion on this topic. Both sides are based on personal experiences, and may or may not hold up statistically in the real world, but personal experience often makes the decisions- I know mine sure did. I dumped my oil based air filter after paying for a MAF replacement, but many others here haven’t had that problem with theirs.

I’m not going to argue with your point. Obviously if you run with no filter, you’re stuffed.

What you might be missing here is the reference to the recently deleted thread where Toyota was denying warranty on a blown engine because the felt the aftermarket aFe filter “pushed dirt into the engine” (not my words.....from what I recall from the thread, which mods have removed).

I am not claiming to have experienced anything like this personally, and cannot provide you with documents. Anyways.....I’m sounding like a broken record.

but do you know why they had code issues related to after market filters?
from what I heard, it was do to oil on the maf sensor!
That means, when they renewed the filter, they over oiled it!
I've had a k&n in my truck for over 200k & never had an issue, had a k&n in my 91 pick up 22r-e for 330k, no issues.
until I've seen the posts about the oil on sensor issue, i've never heard of it before.

Please don't think i'm arguing, I'm seeking knowledge, I followed that thread til it vanished, once I saw the pic's of the engine compartment & how dirty it was, I knew it was user error & stupidity that destroyed his engine & not the filter.
I've have never heard anything about any properly installed filter destroying an engine. thats all. I'm not hastleing you.

Ok. I see your point. It’s hard sometimes to judge tone, as we all know, with forums. Good question actually. Are we chasing a “unicorn” situation that never actually happens, other than to our buddy with his blown 55k engine? That could be the case. Has anyone else been denied warranty for aftermarket parts??

Never had a truck under warranty but it would be hard to blame any problems on their brand of filter that has been replaced when it need to be replaced.

That said I run Wix air filters in my truck. I drive a lot of gravel, 160k miles, 15 years old, runs great.

Toyota fix the first head or throw a crate engine in it?

My beef with the stock filter is the nearest dealer is over an hour away. Which means if I got one under warranty as soon as it was out of warranty it would have a good parts store brand filter in it because I ain't driving 1hr+ for an air filter or paying to ship one from the internet if I don't have to.

Didn't read all 8 pages but my thoughts are aftermarket offers no additional increases except better intake sound (if that's your thing) meanwhile the increase oil could gunk up the maf and void your warranty. Don't see a point to it.

As for the OVtune .... ??? I think the SSP works as well with no probs with warranty.
But then again I did 4:88’s and a front locker!
But I know anything there is on me, so if something goes wrong there you won’t catch a thread from me crying that Toyota screwed me o_O:thumbsup:
