Would the savings from the Chicken Tax be enough to build USA? Oh and just so everyone doesn't get the wrong idea on disel performance...my diesel VW runs like a striped jackass trying to pass a tax increase....

My other two vehicles are vw tdi's. I've been considering a 4x4 trail rig swap into a tracker. If my tacoma got 40 mpg, it would be the PERFECT vehicle. If Toyota would put a small, efficient, and torquey turbodiesel into a 4x4 pickup at the factory, It would be even better.

I know the SA as a standard on all tacos would be a stretch, but what if they had a trail truck package where that was one of the options?

    at what cost?

Toyota is already having trouble getting their vehicles to operate properly...lets add some more mechanical options...

plus the price tag on them would jump high enough that more people would be less inclined to buy

on top of that...lets examine Ford briefly...who came out with (not solid axle) but rather a vehicle off its lot upgraded for a specific group of people

the raptor is going over like a ton of freaking bricks

Tiger you keep saying more mechanical, but a SA is less mechanical than the IFS set up now as I understand it. IFS takes more engineering and even more parts than a SA right? Or am I just spitting in the wind?

Everything has a price tag, so a specialized truck package would cost more than the base, but I can't see it costing more than 3-5K at the most. But I would have no idea how to set a price tag on it, because we wouldn't know how much it costs to build it.

How much do you think it would cost to build a SA taco with a diesel from the factory as a specialized package? What would you put the sticker at?

i dont mean that its more complicated...but rather ANOTHER option package that they would have to price/add in/build

considering how much i was going to pay to put a solid axle underneath my truck...itd cost a LOT more than 3-5K

your right...the solid axle is simpler but another options package i think would piss toyota off...lol...idk is it just me....but the taco dosen't have that many availible options or configurations? i think they like to keep it simple. i mean a silverado there are like 80 different shitty engines you can have with like 8 axles and 5 different crap transmissions lol

I don't think it would be that much of a stretch for Toyota to create an off road package. They have the "Rock Warrior" option for the tundra, why not have something like that for the Taco?

Now, I will say that i don't think it will happen with the way the economy is right now. But later on I think/hope that would change. Call me optimistic, there are too many downers in the world already LOL.

Where and who would put the different options in the truck? Would you hire the additional folks here in the U.S. (techs) to build to order or would you let Japan put it in another or another country who builds Tacomas....Just asking not trying to stir the pot....

Don't know, but a good question. I would guess Toyota would follow the same practice as any of there other specialty packages for other vehicle lines, like the Tundra rock warrior or some of the factory supped up scion Xb's. Hell I would be happy with a factory kit that the dealer could install like the super charger.

Yeah I agree...putting it in a kit would allow some versatility for installation. I just wonder what kind of job it would be to change out ...let's say a front axle? I wonder if you couldn't engineer in some easy way on the body to remove and reinstall?

Putting the suspension mounts on the body of every Tacoma so that 3% of them can updrade to a solid axle just isn't cost effective. Your best bet is to find an old FJ80 and cut the entire front suspension out and weld it on to the Taco. That is pretty much what Toyota did on the concept truck with they did.
