first gen since they dont have issues with shitty 4cyl clutches and 6 speeds that eat pilot bearings

True, the US military is 3/4 of the reason I decided to buy a Tacoma. While I was over seas the first time some of the SF guys were driving around in some DC First Gens.

    too damn many
with more a electrical componants and different nannies and other more complicated things of course 2nd gens will have more problems not to mention the first generations of tacomas are easily one of the most reliable mid sized trucks in history! the 3.4 v6 taco is also one of the best resale values, even with 100k+ they still sell for 10k in good condition, but also the 2nd gens havent had as long to prove themselves but i guess 6 years would be a pretty decent showing of quality i guess.

Of course people say 1st gens are more reliable ... they haven't been made in 7 years. The ones still out there have proven to be very reliable. Plenty of them made it to the junkyard too. And consider that the ones who were unhappy with their 1st gens probably moved on to other brands long ago. So they're not posting here.

Honestly, it's too early to know how the 2nd gens will hold up over the long term. Guaranteed in another 7 years, there will be plenty posting up on the 2nd gen vs 3rd gen poll about how great their 2005-2011 has proven to be. And those who end up hating theirs will have moved on to other pastures.

Yeah but that's because 2nd gen owners outnumber 1st gen owners more than 3 to 1 on the forums. Check tcBob's poll here ...

    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/technical-chat/64-what-year-your-tacoma.html

So of course there are more 2nd gen problems reported! Probably in a ration of about 3 to 1. ;)

I had a 1986 toyota pickup for 17 years and 200,00 miles.Ran great but rust destroyed it.I should have kept my 2003 truck, however I wanted a new 2nd gen.I had a lot of problems with it.Finally bought a 2009.Clutch squeak is gone after the factory rep got involved.Radio was replaced.
I do like the ride better on the 2nd gen.

With begin a 2gen owner... it seems like the 1st gen is built better and will last longer. But hopefully mine surpass my opinion :).

from what i have seen growing up, the 1st generations are more reliable. an old high school friends dad had a red one...not sure what model, but it had like 300,000 miles on it. the only thing he kept replacing was the exhaust. i dont really know much about the toyota. i bought one so i could get get better gas mileage. i would say the tacoma is the best mid-size truck on the market.

Its a toss up right now. That 22re engine was built like a tank. (I remember my 1989 4cyl stock 5 speed truck. To this day I still would love to have that truck.) I had a number of those in a number of trucks. I have not owned my 2nd gen long enough to really choose between the two. I think the 1st gen cosmetically were built better but as far as reliability right now i have no complaints about the 2nd gen. I would say both for now.

I dunno about 2nd gens, but my first gens body panels seem to be made of painted tinfoil.. this displeases me

I would have bought a 1st gen if I could have found a good one that wasn't beat to death. That's the problem in my area. Guys will beat the shit out of it, and then once it starts showing early signs of needing major repairs, they'll sell it.

Problem is it's very hard to pick up on those things. My old truck I knew every single creak and shimmy. I knew exactly when something wasn't quite right. But a new driver would have no idea. So it really comes down to seller honesty. I think we all probably know people who got burned on a used sale when they discovered big problems developing 6,9,12 months after the fact.
