The manual was the biggest attraction. I had a diesel ZR2 and just got bored of driving an automatic and yearned for a manual, so here I am.

This poll should be a multiple response.

    My reasons were:
    1. Tacoma’s overall reputation in the midsize pickup category
    2. Toyota’s reputation for engine durability
    3. Resale value

Should I change this to multiple choice? The reason I went with one choice was to see if any one thing stood out...

For me it was a combination of capability, upgrade possibilities, resale, and rep. We had a 90 Hi Lux 4X4 and a 91 4-Runner that were great. After kid #2 they were just too small and we went to a half-ton truck and a Durango 4X4's. We replaced the Durango with a Jeep and my wife and I had been thinking of replacing my Ram 1500. We had a TRD Off Road 4X4 as a rental while on vacation and my wife hit me up with a " How about one of these". I told her I didn't want anything other than a full-size and I was thinking of going to a 3/4 ton with a diesel. I think I changed my mind by the end of the first day. The Tacoma was so much more comfortable to drive and got much better mileage than my old truck. It was also a hell of a lot less than what I was thinking of buying. No, the Tacoma can't tow like a full size and the bed is smaller, but the trade off is worth it. Day to day driving is so much better and I can park it in the garage without having to be tire to tire with my wife's Jeep. Turns out, the Tacoma is just right.

Once I saw the Al Queda mods, I knew the Taco’s potential.

I couldn't change the poll question (says pick one), so I added an "all of the above" response and kept it single choice. Let's see how that plays out!

I'm really not surprised by the top 3 responses. Looks, reputation and prior Tacoma owners. I am surprised that almost nobody chose best deal or features. Goes to show people care more about reliability than getting the cheapest truck.

I went with the reliability and reputation. Not sure if this matters but I've grown up surfing and living on the coast and it seems like 1/3 guys who surf will drive a tacoma. Maybe that's just in Florida, but it seems true every time I travel to surf within the country. I wonder if Toyota even knows the reputation they have among surfers...lol

I have owned Toyota trucks since 1977. They have been good to me. I see no reason to switch brands. My 2019 is the best one yet.

Similar in SoCal. Parking is tight in most spots so it's real good for that. Haul your buddies and gear and sippin gas from Ensenada to Santa Cruz. You know real surfers don't work any more than necessary, so value is important.

Had a 2nd gen and went to a 16 WRX for a while. Had the itch to go back to a truck and plan on getting a small camper (once I’m in Colorado). Resale and reliability are focal points for me.

    I wanted this ^^^

I was driving a 3.5yo Macan S as a daily driver, and a 10yo FJ with 200k miles as my beater. Couldn't justify a Macan and a Cayman. Couldn't have an FJ and Cayman combo as we take my ride everywhere. She's not a fan of the Cayman, but a night on the town in the FJ just felt weird: Rails, full Gobi Rack and Ladder, 4 forward facing spot lights up top, 10 years of wear and tear, etc. So that combo wasn't going to work.

    1. Sell the FJ and get a utility vehicle that I could take out on the town if necessary.
    2. Wait for the right Cayman to show up on my search engine.
    3. Sell Macan for Cayman.

So.... I bought the Taco so I could buy the Cayman.

My experience was different. '07 original owner. The only thing that needed fixing was an alternator at ~135k miles. Other than brakes, batteries, plugs, oil, tires, rotations, I didn't spend a dime on maintenance in 10 years and 200k miles. YMMV.
