I have an SR5 all stock (2k miles) and I got 22.4mpg highway miles this weekend. Average 21.2 with city driving, rarely flooring it.

I was getting 17 plus but after the lift and 285s, I'm lucky to get 15. I decided to trade the mileage for turning it into a truck.

No, that's not entirely correct. While the 285 tells the width, the 2nd number is a ratio between the tread width and sidewall heighth. When you look at someone who has lifted their truck, they probably didn't put a lower profile tire on the truck, which would negate some of the lift.

Checking on tirerack.com, when you compare the same tire in 3 different sizes (BF Goodrich KO2s, in this case) you find that a stock 245/75-16 is 30.4inches, a stock 265/70-16 is 30.6 inches, and a 285/75-16 is 32.8 inches. That's a pretty big jump if you ask me.

    Yes , the same as a 265/ 70 -16 is 1" less than a 265 / 70 - 17 tire . so again one must give more info than 265's in this case.

I don't disagree with that at all. I was simply giving it as an example of the differences in tire height of tires he might be using based on what he was driving. It's a little misleading to say that 285 only referred to the width of the tire.

You are right , I was just trying to show that when a tire size given by the first no. only, really means very little to answer their ?'s.
At the same time 285 means only the width of a tire !Without the other numbers it is useless .

    Tacoma cruise control sucks.
Tacoma gas gauge doesn't like being over 65 MPH.
    Bigger tires, more rotational mass.
    Lifted, worsening already poor aerodynamics.

    Tacoma's are notoriously fuel inefficient.

    Good MPG wanted?

    Get 245s.
    Stay under 65 MPH/2000 RPM.
    Stock suspension.

Yes, but given the photo and description of the truck (SRT?..I'm assuming he meant SR5, or even a base SR), the description of the lift (3"), and the factory wheels in the photo, think one could make a make a pretty safe assumption that the tire was indeed substantially taller than the stock tire.

You obviously understand how tire sizes work .
Would it not just be easier for people to say I have 31's or 32's or 33's etc . I think it is a matter of a lot of people not knowing what the numbers mean . Pictures are not always up to date etc.

245/75/16, the smaller OEM tire size.

LOL, you know, I hate metric tires, when people tell me their tire size I'm like '??????.' When someone says they have 35/12.5 I get it. I come from the Jeep side so everything is 33's and 35s. I came here and people are talking about 285/75s and im like well wtf does that mean. I know how tire sizes work but I still use a tire converter to see the real size.

I get 21-23mpg completely unloaded at stock height on the freeway. I drive around 70mph which will play a part in that. There's a big mpg decrease between 70&75 with these trucks. I also keep an eye on the instant MPG meter and try to keep it as high as possible. Ill be lifted 3" with 285's very soon so I'll be watching the difference

Whenever I drive South-SouthWest I'll get 15mpg. When I come back North-NorthEast I'll get 20-21mpg. Our trucks are not very aerodynamic lol.

This was my truck when I bought it. 24mpgs wasn't hard. 26mpgs would have been obtainable if I kept the speed low.
