I admire your ingenuity however I would say that that setup is very unsafe. I would recommend either getting a shackle mount like what Warn sells or just using the recovery strap on the pin. I think the abrasive action on the strap is an acceptable loss considering the cost. I would be very concerned about the bolt, the shock load placed on the chain and a 5/8" shackle. When one of those fails you will have a very dangerous missile on your hands. Please read here for some valuable info regarding recovery and potential strain you could encounter.

When it says "Maximum load capcity: 10,000 lbs." is this the WLL or the breaking strength?

The other shackle brackets I've seen say ~10k capacity but don't specify WLL or breaking strength so I assume it to be WLL.

A grade 'A' 3/4 shackle has about ~50k lbs breaking strength. A 5/8 shackle ~30k, and a 1/2 shackle ~20k. My straps have a rating of 27k breaking strength. So they should be the weakest link when I hook up using a 3/4 shackle. I'm just curious about these blocks.

I personally wouldn't use the chain either though.

    Shackle strengths

    Another good read

^^ Gotta agree with Kilted. Do it right the first time and get a proper setup before somebody gets injured... Good luck!

The chain isn't the part is would have concerns about. If it was rated approximate 10k lbs, that ** SHOULD ** have been the WLL with a 4:1 safety ratio. The bad news is that the grade 8 bolt has between a 20k and 30k limit ( and that isn't accounting for the lack of even pressure across the bolt). Hopefully your using a 10k strap as the weak point.

Straps stretch, if the bolt were the weakest point that chunk of chain would hurt.

That was my first thought looking at that. A broken strap is no big deal, but a broken bolt (or if the chain breaks in the middle) can go right through the windshield. This is why you are supposed to use straps that don't have hooks on the ends.

Youtube is full of videos of what happens when a strap breaks with something heavy at the end:

Just put a hitch pin in there and hook the strap onto that. It's ok if it gets frayed; that's way better than half-assing it to save $5 and killing someone by having that cheesy bolt/chain setup come through their windshield.

I have an extra draw bar with no ball in it. I just put my shackle through the hole where the ball would usually be.

I will stick with my Warn receiver. There is no way I would trust that thing with the chain and bolt. You should always put a heavy blanket on the rope or strap so that wouldn't happen. If the strap or rope would break it would just fall to the ground if it had a blanket on it.
