I bought my 2018 4x4 Tacoma brand new for reliability. Now after several recalls and now engine light on throwing p11ec code. I took to dealer and they said they are replacing the valves and need the truck for a week. I'm pissed, at only 30000 miles major engine repair needed. I'm selling now as they cannot tell me why this happened and if it will happen again. Anyone else have this problem? I'm so disappointed and down as I love my truck but can't trust it now. My 2002 Tacoma never had a single issue even with the Trd supercharger.

Couple things... first, why would you let one problem make you lose total faith in the truck as a whole. And second, what was the code for?

Replacing the valves could indeed be a reasonable fix for a P11ec; hopefully they have done a full diagnosis and aren't guessing... it's unfortunate; I would guess a manufacturing defect in one of the valves causing the problem. I wouldn't let it turn you off the truck. It's a simple enough fix and you'll have a good-as-new truck when done.

I mean I guess. I've driven 3, 2 had issues. Their quality is even worse than Toyota.

Definitely dont buy the new F150, never buy first year vehicles. Look at the new 7.3 in the F250, people are having issues already.

Don’t stay away from ford right now. They are facing tons of issues and lawsuits regarding transmissions and air conditioning and ecu issues. Can’t believe I’m going to say this but look into *ew* ram or Chevy.

Same for Ram. Tons of issues. And when you do have issues. Their dealers are THE WORST. Everyone knows FCA dealers are garbage. They rank worst in customer service every year.

My friend is a Toyota mechanic so I reached out to him and he said get rid of the truck asap after fix. Said major problem with these engines and they burn up exhaust valves like crazy.

I might buy a low mileage 2014 or 15 tacoma. He said those engines seem to be the best.

Uh, your friend been drinking? The 3.5 has been around awhile in the Lexus Toyota lineup, and pretty reliable. Always going to have a few with issues when they sell 300,000+ units per year (way more of the engine since it’s used in other vehicles too).

I think if it was that common, there would be a s*** ton of threads on here about it. The rear diff whine seems to be somewhat common and a quick search will find a lot of threads. If the 3.5 is eating valves that quickly and it was widespread, that’s all this forum would be talking about.

It sucks that it happened either way OP, and I hope you get things figured out one way or the other.

Your friend is either stupid or liar.
I am also looking at f150 since I’ve sold mine due to space constraints. I’m probably going to end up with 2.7EB, I’m going in knowing that it won’t be as reliable as Tacoma, despite it being a pig of a drivetrain on a Tacoma.

I would not have believed it either but its true. I bet we will see some sort of a recall when the numbers get higher or someone gets a lawyer involved. I love my truck and hope the fix this in next gen.

Here are my thoughts. Took 30,000 miles to break. Now they fix it back to the way it was when new and in 30,000 miles it could break again and warranty will be gone. What is causing this problem? The dealership has no answer for me.

What other examples do you have of this problem? How many have been diagnosed with the same problem and was the root cause the same for all of them? Toyota has built around a million 3rd gens so far and the engine hasn’t changed. I’m not sure how that wouldn’t have topped the rear diff thread by now if 3.5 was that bad. Not trying to start an argument, but one truck and your buddy’s word doesn’t make it a widespread problem. Right now it’s just hyperbole.
