I was just trying to warn others but all I got was sh!t talking. I baby my truck and even my service tech said he has seen this multiple times already. No numbers to give you and I won't have them because I'm done. Enjoy your truck and I hope you do not get stranded like I did.

Probably build nearly a million a year of the 3.5 across the Toyota models and brands. Dealer techs always seem bias as everyone is forced to the dealer for warranty repairs.

A valve issue is not unheard of though, couple threads on here about it. Most report back a replacement head and sometimes an extended warranty. A few here and there is nothing usually. Pentastar, now that is an engine with head issues.

All anybody is saying is. That it is not going to happen to every engine and it's really a fixable problem. Sell it, set it on fire, have it stolen..... collect the insurance, buy a Ford, Chevy or Dodge and enjoy

Just spoke with my friend who is also a Toyota Tech for one of the largest Tacoma dealers.
He said all new vehicles have issues that’s why he has a job.
But there is no known trending issues with exhaust valves with the Tacoma's so I don’t know where your friend is getting that info from.
Good luck with the ford drove one for 30 years they are not built like these trucks.

The report of the issue is appreciated, but you didn't get shit, you got perspective. Every brand has issues, you got the short straw this time around. Let them fix it and decide your own actions. With the used prices right now you can probably get back what you paid new.

Believe me man I would be pissed also !!! Maybe see if you can get them to give you a free extended warranty to maybe 100,000 miles. I have a 2nd gen with the 2.7 so I don't follow the 3rd gen much but I know I have read of others having problems with valves. Wish you good luck on whatever you decide and I do understand your frustration.

I mean, I feel bad for you but I think you want to act like this isn’t isolated so you feel more supported and can commiserate. I also have a buddy, he’s a master tech, manages the largest Toyota shop in WA and is a Toyota appointed/trained fixer for the westcoast region.

I sent him your post and he responded that early on they saw a few cases where the seats dropped and lead to failure. He said it is almost always recognized first by the cylinder imbalance code that you experienced. Now, he sees nearly all of the problem cases that the region uses for program development and said this is no where near large enough to constitute any type of official response, or even a behind the scenes approach. The failure rate per units sold is simply insignificant.

here’s a sweet visual of a failure case using a cylinder pressure transducer:

I hope you get it fixed up and I really feel for you, man!

Traction, serious question. He said early on they saw this problem and years later we are still seeing it. Did they find out why it is happening. There is another post on here that had this problem in a 2019 so its not just my model year. I'm just worried that it will happen again if they are not replacing it with parts that correct the initial problem.

The guy I know is not high up on the food chain but said he sees this issue frequently and so did the guys checking me at the ser ice dept. If they offered an extended warranty I would probably keep the truck but when I asked about one they said no.

He said he’s had a few cases that were predominantly early 3.5s, which doesn’t necessarily mean Tacoma’s. Also said there have been casting changes in the heads but that also didn’t mean it was to remedy that problem alone. I could ask him more specific questions if you would like, as I am no authority here.

My point was that if the busiest shop in the NW has not noted enough cases to determine this issue to be “frequently occurring,” then you are likely being fed hearsay.

Keep us updated, if you take your complaint up the chain maybe you can get the warranty you are after. As others have said, resale is great right now as well so there’s always that route, too!

    vent away!

I always tell patients wondering about the seemingly small percentages of complications for procedures that, while it may seem small, these statistics still represent individuals who don’t think the complication is insignificant. Your scenario is similar. This is a huge failure and it sucks. The statistics come from experiences, however, and even if there are a seemingly insignificant number in total, it doesn’t suck any less.

you should see the taco he’s replacing a long block on after an unfortunate water crossing incident. What a fine paper weight that thing has become.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I bought my first new car on a Wednesday and by Friday night towed to the dealer. They fixed it and I drove it for 10 years and 250k. Let them fix it then beat the tarnation out of it

Just had this P11EC code come on Saturday. 2018 Tacoma with 35k miles. Been at Toyota of Bellevue for 6 days and they haven’t even given me an update yet. Haven’t heard or seen anything easily repaired after getting this code. Really thinking about just selling mine after I get it repaired. Please keep us updated with your experience!

Why Toyota decided to put a minivan engine into the heavier 3rd gen Tacoma is really questionable. Appears just to meet US EPA requirements. Certainly not for reliability.

Late 2nd gens are so hard to find, because people realize they are the best year Tacomas with proven reliability.

It’s been 5 years buddy, gotta stop using the “it’s not a real truck engine”debate. The 3.5 is one of the best engines yota has built. The 3.5s in other models have already racked up insane mileage. 390,000 on my dads highlander. 2nd gen owners act like the 4.0 is a torque monster, but in reality they make they same torque the 3.5 just makes it higher up, not to mention the 40 hp gain is noticeable on the highway.

I got the 2.7 4 cylinder, I had some regret of not getting the v6 when I first bought it, the damn thing has given me no problems after almost 100k miles. I really love the 2.7 4 cylinder now. Have no doubt I can hit 300k
