I had a dealer offer me extremely low value for my VW trade in when I was shopping Tacoma's last month. Then wouldn't stop hounding me after I left to make a deal on a Tacoma. Went to another dealer and they gave me fair value for my trade in so they got my business.

The other dealer tried to tell me my entire VW had been repainted at some point. I've owned that car from new and knew it wasn't painted. Morons.

TRD ORs are a dime a dozen here in socal. The dealer was probably reading you as eager to get rid of your truck so they lowballed.

It's all a game with these guys... you have to pretend to be uninterested in selling, but be interested enough to see what you can get, but again not too interested. It's like dating a woman lol.

What messed up tacoma resale value is the trim configuration.

companies like carvana are listing sr models as Trd O/R’s and such. They aren’t pricing them to account for the packages they come in. Things like leather and roofs.

I was shopping pre owned and went to cars.com and to my surprise I so so many nice ones stocked in wrong.

that being said, it drops the hell out of their value in their market.

plus Tacoma’s have great retail value, ok trade in value. Same as a Honda.

but if you go to an auction you get pricing messed up because it won’t adjust for the packages.

That's what you get for asking for a trade-in value, without a trade.

Thanks, I know I'm not a Dave Ramsey with money and I obviously am not doing myself favors trading trucks all the time, but I'm good about negotiating the smallest loss and for me it brings some joy / hobby, better than some who throw thousands away every year on smoking, alcohol or whatever.

I was in the same situation less than 2 years ago. Originally planned on buying low mileage used Taco but with prices being close, I just bought a new 2018.

My dad told me how stupid i was, he goes "you can save 5k buying used!" Im like, whats the point, especially when you already spending 30-35k? Also, I wanted the MT, so who the hell knows how the truck was driven.

He loves to get rebuilts ( he likes toyota BTW) and says buying rebuilt is the way to go. I just laugh... One time i told him: " hey dad, remember you wanted to sell your rebuilt 4R? You wanted 12k and 1 only 1 guy offered 6k?" He goes "oh people are dumb snd dont know how great of a vehicle that is", so he ended up keeping and getting newer 4R. He is very old school and stuck in his own ways, like most dads are from 60s.

Im so glad i didnt get used or rebuilt, good luck selling a rebuilt. Love my truck and plan to keep it for a long time.

I’m also 100% happy with me decision to buy new, I plan to keep the truck for a long time and care for it to MY standards. Oil changes every 5k for example. I don’t want to buy a used truck owned by someone who thought “Okay, 10,000 miles between changes, sweet!” And then changed the oil every 12k or so out of laziness.
