Mine is always doing that. The handle feels spongy and won't open up unless I push the tailgate forward. Never had this occur with the original part. I've accepted that the replacement is somewhat flimsy. But, it's really the only option I have so I live with it.

Installed mine today - with the Bolt key coding option. Easy install, clear instructoions. Best to watch the video on their site - 4 minutes out of your life and it will make things painless. Coding the key is so easy - that is a great feature.

oddly, on Amazon it said that the 5400 will not fit my vehicle (2009 gen 2 TRD sport), but of course it does, and did. Mounting the rear view camera was a cinch.

The quality of the lock was OK at least - interestingly the OEM handle unit was rusty and in need of lubrication, so the new one works better than the old for now. if it fails I'll be sure to report back.

Mine works just fine after 3 months and feels sturdy. I don't have a tonneau yet, but plan on getting one and using the lock more often. We will see how it holds up then. Install was easy and codeable lock worked fine with my key.

I recommend using this on the moving parts. I've had mine over a year now and I haven't ran into a single problem(knock on wood). Doesn't feel solid as the stock handle but it works.

Is this a condition unique to the 5400? I had a 5300 on my 2010 for 4 years -trouble free. Have had a 5500 on my 2015 for 2 months, same story.

Installed in about 40 mins, working fine for now. I don't care for how loud it clacks, but I am looking for some kind of foam to build a chamber around it. TacomaTruckParts offers an improved mounting set up for the pop and lock, though I don't know if it works on the 5400.

Have had no problems for 18 months with my 5400 on my 14 sport. I lock and unlock it frequently. I do have to push in on the tail gate most of the time to get the tail gate open.

I've had mine with the Bolt option for about 18 months and, outside of a few hiccups, it works fine.

Still waiting to hear if the 2016 handle will be backwards compatible... but I highly doubt it.
