Hi - I recently purchased a 2012 taco and it came with the Pop and Lock tailgate lock. The previous owner did not leave the keys when he traded the truck in and I have somehow locked the tailgate without the key... I was wondering if anyone has the same key would be willing to give up a spare key for a few bucks?

I can order replacement keys approx. $15, but I'm cheap and I'm not convinced its not something with the lock.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this might sound like a silly comment but have you tried unlocking the pop-and-lock with your truck key?

Many people, myself included, installed pop-and-lock's on their Tacoma's which are keyed to their ignition lock.

Yep. I tried to put the key in the one day to see if it worked and it did not.

OP mentions IL18, which appears to be a P&L key. My P&L key is an IL key also, but not 18.

A replacement P&L lock would be more costly, than a $15 replacement key. But, certain P&L locks are known to be defective, and self-locking. There are ways to bypass the lock to gain access to the tailgate.

How can you bypass the lock? The tailgate is closed. I tried to remove the inner liner to access the lock assembly to bypass it, but I an not able to remove the inner liner.

this is the only way i've been able to do it. unscrew the plastic and pull it back (if you cant get it completely off) and manually pull the tailgate release. if you can pull off the cap and the top part of the cover, you can fit your arm in there to do it
