This is great! Thanks for the write up, I need one of these as I plan on buying a cover in the very near future. Out of random curiosity, hypothetically, what happens when the tail is down, you lock the truck, then proceed to close the tailgate? Would this damage/break the lock?

Just ordered my bed cover. Got the undercover ultra flex. Wanting to change my tailgate lock to power. Debating if should tie in to the power locks or run a separate switch in the cab.

I ran mine to a separate switch to reduce wear and tear on the tailgate lock - I don't access the bed nearly as often as I lock/unlock the cab.

There is no wear and tear on the tailgate lock. The pop n lock just uses an actuator to put a metal stopper in the way of the tailgate handle opening. The actuator is what moves, not anything that was on the truck from the factory.

Powering via the power door lock or via a separate switch would just be a personal choice of preference but will not save any wear or tear.

Alright, dumb question time. Ordered the Pop and Lock PL85409 (Power Smart Lock Combo w/ BOLT Codeable in Magnetic Grey Metallic because I felt fancy) for my 2014 Tacoma Double Cab.

Installed the new handle and actuator, replaced the back-up camera, easy enough. Ran the wires under and along the frame to the passenger side, through the rubber grommet in between passenger front/rear door, along the side towards the kick plate. Nothing is zipped-tied yet. Per the OP's photos I'm almost positive I have the right bundle of wires. I found the Blue/Pink and the Blue/Black wires and attached the Green/Blue harness to the wires using Dorman Conduct-Tite Quick Splices from AutoZone. And I got nothing. Are the correct wires the same for 2014 Double Cabs as the OP's 2012?

Now, I noticed that while the wire bundle harness with all the wires was currently unplugged, I was able to still use my FOB to lock/unlock my doors. In my electrical-challenged expertise, does this mean I tried to tap into the wrong wire bundle or is it something else?

ETA: I got it working. I didn't get the quick splice tight enough with pliers to make the connection with the wires. Also might have helped on the second round that I used wire cutters to make a small strip/cut on the blue/red and the blue/black. But I definitely squeezed the hell out of the quick splices this time to make sure.

Has anyone attempted to retrofit a tailgate lock from a 3rd generation (2016+ model year) Tacoma on a 2nd generation (2005-2015 model year)?

Similarly, has anyone attempted to retrofit a tailgate lock from a Tundra on a 2nd generation Tacoma? Although I can't tell you off the top of my head which model years of Tundra came equipped from the factory with a tailgate lock, I'm aware that some did. This may have been an option and not standard equipment. My understanding is that ignition key can be used to lock and unlock the factory tailgate lock and that the lock is not powered. Is this correct? I understand that this not a Tundra forum, but I figured I would ask in case of the Tacoma owners that post on this forums are also familiar with the Tundra.

3rd generation Tacoma is equipped with a manual lock on the tailgate, the 2nd generation does not. I haven't compared the geometry of both tailgates to make a judgement as whether or not this install would be a directed bolt-in retrofit.

I have no need for a powered tailgate lock at the moment, just a manual tailgate lock that can be locked with a key. Doesn't have to be the same key as the ignition key.

I already have a Pop & Lock PL8521 installed on my 2012 Tacoma. I never wired up the power actuator. I installed this locking mechansim circa December of 2014. I attempted to open my tailgate last week and handle broke. I'm interested installing a manual lock from a 3rd generation Tacoma that possesses the same Toyota quality as the other factory parts installed on my truck.
