Thank you OP for this tutorial :)

decided to go different route myself (Someone suggested it somewhere )93477C3B-3551-4A4B-9785-85C94B6118EC.jpg

It took me a bit more time taking off the storage behind the seat but it was totally worth it!

Random question - I did this mod successfully, and then followed it up with a camper shell PL9555 (similar concept but for rear camper shell lock). Rather than running the wiring the whole way up front, I tapped into the previously run wire. The tailgate works 100% of the time, but the camper shell seems to only work intermittently - if I use a key to open it, it will work 100% afterward for a while, or if it's warm out it seems to work. Usually I just cycle the clicker a few times and it'll work on the 3rd or 4th try. Anyone have any thoughts?

Just finished this on my 2014 double cab short bed. Blue pop n lock wire to blue and black Tacoma wire. Greenish pop n lock wire to blue and red Tacoma wire.

Did the paracord backup as well.

    Thanks for the writeup!

There's a lot of good information on this thread, thanks to all who contributed, it made my install much easier. I want to share what I did with the wiring where it leaves the tailgate and enters under the truck bed. I used the plastic plugs that the backup camera wires run through by drilling a hole in it for the Pop & Lock wiring. Doing this protects the wiring from rubbing on metal. Also, where the wiring goes through the grommet under the cab, I poked a little hole in it with a nail, close to where factory wires run through the grommet. You want this as tight as possible and the rubber expands easily allowing wires to be pulled through, there's no reason to cut or make a big hole in the grommet.

Installed Pop & Lock today. Followed the back up camera wiring like Gerard6778 post#507, and then through the grommet under the passenger seat. Found some money there lol. In addition to the hose clamp, this definitely adds another layer of security.

Installed about 8 months ago. It has been temperamental the last few weeks but officially stopped functioning today.

When locking or unlocking, the bracket will really only move about a quarter of what it should (even after greasing today and previously a few months ago). Actuator also sounds weak and will stop even attempting to budge after a few unlocks and locks.

Had the unfortunate experience of learning that Pop & Lock will not warranty the product as it is purchased through Amazon. And as it is over 6 months, Amazon cannot help me out with a replacement.

Anyone have any recommendations for why it failed so quickly? I have a hard tonneau, so having my tailgate lock is really helpful for securing my stuff. But I don't exactly want to be spending $100 every 8 months... Pretty disappointed in the product.

Installing this right now. Have everything done except the interior wiring- came on here to find out witch wires to tap.

Used someones suggestion and removed and drilled the plastic grommet that the rear camera goes through in the bottom of the tail gate and through the bottom part of the box. Didn't put it in the loom just under neath it and zip tie in place. Then I ran the wiring down the passenger side of the frame, found a plug in the floor right over the frame about where the rear seat bolts to (same as shown below). Pulled the plug drilled it and ran the wire through for a tight water proof seal.

Installed a safety pull cord in case of being stuck in the locked position. Others have done this but didn’t feel comfortable with the cord hanging out... so instead I taped the cord just inside the hole - you’d have to know it’s there and use a little hook to get it.

Bluetooth and aux input added to stock JBL sound system. Full coverage skid plate.
I used a variation on this method and it worked quite well. My strategy was to run the wiring along the driver's side frame rail, through factory the grommet under the driver's seat, under the door sill, and then through the dash to the passenger side door wiring. That allowed me to avoid waterproofing issues. There are so many posts that suggest poking a hole through grommets and then using silicone. On the factory grommet, simply remove the tape on the neck, lubricate your wires with alcohol, and thread them trough. It's very easy. Re-tape when you are done and you will again have a factory seal.
