I installed the Pop & Lock PL8535 Power Tailgate Lock today. Pretty easy install into my 2017 Access Cab. I got the kit from Amazon: http://amzn.to/2CaCes5 and it took me about 1 hour to install. First off, the instructions call for a T27 to open the tailgate cover, but I found the T30 fit perfectly without wiggle. Other folks on Amazon cautioned not to use a cheap torx, and that may have been because they were using the wrong size.

The most tedious part was wiring the solenoid through the tailgate - there are 2 plastic clips, one going out of the tailgate and one going into the truck body, and they carry the wire for the backup camera. I stripped the first 3 feet of sheathing off of the Pop&Lock wire that goes from the solenoid to a waterproof connector and pushed it into the existing wire loom. You can see it looks pretty sanitary in the 2nd pic, (that was taken before putting the loom back into the anchor that attaches to the tailgate) I the wrapped the loom in electrical tape.

I routed the cable under the bed, along the frame rail. I followed an existing loom, and zip tied the wire to that loom's anchors. The instructions say to go up through the engine compartment, but instead I chose to go through the grommet under the passenger seat. I managed to cut about 8' of wire off of the supplied harness, and I used a pair of positaps (http://amzn.to/2H8eCIz) to tap into the wiring under the passenger kick panel.

The connnector on the access cab is in the top right position on the block, and you need to connect the pop&lock green to the tacoma green, and the pop&lock blue to the tacoma red.

Test the power locks, and if the solenoid actuates in the wrong direction, you can swap the bullet connectors on the solenoid, or, at the positaps. your choice.

Now, the tailgate follows the same logic as the passenger door, and locks with the power button and the key fob. 2 presses on the keyfob unlocks all the doors and the tailgate.

for $86, I think Toyota should have included this, but it's not such a pain that it can't be done. All in all, i'm happy with the mod.

Didn't someone do this install without splicing or tapping anything? Managed to connect to the factory harness somehow.

From what I've read this lock only lasts 1 - 2 years. Not worth it to me for the price point.

It's been a while so I don't know if they've improved the quality or not.

Yes, if you look on Pop & Lock's website, they do say it works for Tacoma.

Except for that part where it doesn’t have a sensor..so you have to take the key fob out of your pocket to unlock it.

And since it wired to the passenger door, If you don’t also open an actual door within 90 seconds of unlocking, it re-locks.
So when you set the fob down on the tailgate to change your shoes after golf..cause you had to take it out to unlock it..and then forget you set it on the tailgate, and shut it, in the bed, and you have a cover...and it locks.
And then you have to call your wife and have her bring the spare fob so you can get in the truck.
But you didn’t tell her you took the day off to play in a golf tournament put on by a local strip club, that she also didn’t know that you may or may not frequent....
Yeah it definitely wasn’t the best mod that day.
