TL:DR Pop & Lock remote tailgate lock is not working with my key fob.

I’ve got a 2020 TRD OR DCSB and the locking tailgate is no longer working with my key fob. I can still physically turn the key though to lock and unlock it.

I recently had it at the dealership for service and asked them to check why it’s not locking and unlocking with the fob and the tech just looked at me and said Tacoma tailgates don’t have that function. I could have sworn it did but was like ok whatever and trusted the guy. He said there’s an aftermarket kit you can buy to do that so I went on Amazon and bought the pop & lock kit with the Tacoma specific wiring harness and stuff.

I go and take apart the tailgate cover and go to install it and realize it already has it installed (a little annoyed the tech didn’t bother to check even though I asked and he supposedly did) So I’m guessing the dealer I bought it from (in another state than where I am now) must have installed it as a dealer add on and I’m not crazy and misremembering my truck having that functionality at one point.

I figured I already had the new part so I swapped out everything but the actual long wire going from the tailgate under the truck to the cab (I swapped the actuator and wiring harness inside the cab for the new ones) hoping that this would help fix it however it still doesn’t lock or unlock with the key fob.

Any ideas what could be the issue here? The fob still works for the regular doors just not the tailgate.

You're going to have to trace wires. I bet wherever they tied it in to the door power, it was done with a cheap butt or t-tap and it's worked it's way loose.

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll check that out after work and hopefully it’s a quick find and solution

Usually the tailgate lock goes underneath the passenger seat and is either plug n play, or spliced by the side panel.....you can also unplug the blue and green wires at the lock itself and just attempt to trip the solenoid to lock and unlock....if that works plug back in and go to the passenger door and do the same with the wires disconnected from the truck itself...that way you know the wiring is good.....but before you do anything hit the unlock button twice, if its wired to the passenger side it will need two instead of just a single unlock...I have installed 5 of these kits, and just finished the Toyota version on a 22.....

Are you 100% on passenger side? The one already installed on mine went to driver side and the instructions with the new kit said to run it to the driver said

Toyota instructions for pre 2019 state drivers side and connect in the drivers side footwell. On this forum many go passenger side. I have not looked at any instructions since then and around 2020 Toyota did change some of the wiring, so it may well be passenger side now.

My ‘19 ran up the passenger side, through the unused grommet hole under the passenger seat then plug and play under the passenger side kick panel.

Screen Shot 2022-04-26 at 6.44.54 PM.jpg Mine was wired to the passenger side on the 22, I wired my 16, 17 also to the passenger side.....the only real difference is when you go to unlock, the drivers side is one unlock, the passenger side is 2.....I should have looked at the drivers side connectors as I just add a break glass....Note: this is for the factory harness, you would just use the existing grommet for a different kit, like the pop n lock.
