About a month ago I bought a new to me 2020 TRD off-road. It has a rough country 3.5 inch lift in the front and a set of TRD pro 17 inch wheels with 285/70/17 tires. When I am in reverse and turn the wheel all the way one way or another I will get a slight noise, almost like a light popping noise. I had a set of 265s which are my snow tires mounted and I did not get this noise. I’m not sure where to begin looking? And if this is something to be concerned about? Any input is greatly appreciated.

My assumption is that the tires are hitting the body or fender of the truck, bucking the plastic which is making the “pop” noise. Rubbing is most common in reverse at or near full lock. Mounting the small tires alleviates the issues because well, they are smaller.

Technically speaking if it’s only hitting plastic it would “self clear” after awhile, but if you’re dead set on that tire size then you can find where it’s rubbing and trim that plastic portion off. Look for the scuff marks from the tires and start hacking away!

Thanks for your input. I will have to have a friend give me a hand and take a look and see what we can see. It is only in reverse and it full lock.

With the offset on the OEM Pro wheels it is likely the fender liner that is rubbing. This can be trimmed because its plastic, but I would look online before taking my word for it.

Not fully noticeable by the nekkid eye, but the geometry of your front end shifts when you are reversing (the front end also slightly torques downward)... actually even more than that slightly changes position. Its a bigger tire/wheel offset issue. Like others have said: Chalk the tires and trim where you see chalk. Downgrade size. Or just grin and bear it.

Turns out it is my skid plate rubbing. I had an alignment and they did not put the same number of spacers back in on the skid plate so when the vehicle with flex the skid light was catching somewhere and making the popping noise. Took it back to the shop and they added a couple more washers and the problem is now solved
