Got the other head off today, and all the valves actually looked good. Took it to a machine shop that I had heard good things about - price seems very reasonable for cleaning/pressure testing/decking, and also not terribly bad if I need a valve job.

My phone takes crappy photos, but here's what I've got.

Did you drain the coolant from the block? I'm guessing no. What is that green thing in cylinder 2?

I drained it, but there was still a little in the head when I pulled it.

woohoo! Heads came back from the machine shop today - no cracks, no leaks, no valve work needed! They're cleaned and decked and ready to go on next week. Waiting for the water pump to come in, then it's game on for putting it all back together.

Nice job. Any problems getting the crank bolt or cam sprockets off?

Cams came off with a breaker bar. Crank bolt zipped right off with an impact gun. The crank pulley was a little tricky - had to put the bolt back in to rest the puller against it.

I'm going to pull the next ring of the crank off before reassembly to replace the front crank seal, which is leaky. Wish me luck.

good luck. won't need it though . the hard part is taken care of. just make sure you follow the appropriate processes to put it all back together. have a haynes manual? get one if not. it will have all the torque specs on it.

I'm using the FSM, not the Haynes. Water pump came in today. A few more parts coming Saturday, then it's game-on next week.
