My Taco also makes this popping sound, when I am turning, not full turn, maybe about half.. Sometime on a right or left turn.

One thing that I found was the bushings for the rack and pinion are getting worn, and it looks like the popping is coming from the large bushing/bolt that is under the drivers side.

I just ordered the poly bushing kit for it today (Autozone $20) and it covers all of the bushings for the rack and pinion.

Kind of suprized that no one said this yet, since most of the 4x4 shops stock this poly kit, I figured that everyone was having to change these after X amount of miles.

start the truck, and leave it on the ground, have someone rock the wheel back and forth 3-6 inches, and see if your rack and pinion looks to be loose..

Looks like it should only take 30 minutes to swap out the bushings.

The rack and pinion would only apply to a 4X4 correct?

Did this popping you hear perhaps coincide with the installation of your Eliite bumper? I ask because I picked up a similar sounding popping after the bumper install.

Mine would pop only in a right turn when I hit a bump. A pothole or a drive way entrance or a curb  would be enough to cause it.

It turns out that the bumper was flexing enough in those circumstances for top edge of the bumper to strike the body plate right below the headlight. The gap was fine when there was no flexing action so I couldn't tell when it was just sitting there. Using some of the shims that Tim provided has all but eliminated the popping.

Not sure if this is what is happening on your truck but I thought I'd throw that out there.

Both 2x4 and 4x4 trucks should have almost the exact same setup for the rack and pinion, and the same problem

Mine just started doing it and it has less than 10k miles on it. I can’t imagine something is worn out already

My popping was also sway bar bushings related, stock OEM replacements solved it.

If there's pertinent info, why not wake an old thread.
    Makes sense to me!!

Fair enough. Just don't expect to hear much from the original thread participants.:)

My truck had a popping sound when doing steering inputs while parking. It turned out to be the steering rack bushing under the passenger side, the one that looks like a pipe strap. When the wheel is turned, the whole rack moves a bit side to side; it's supposed to do so. In my case, the movement would suck one side of the bushing in under the retainer loop and hold it under tension, and then it would release when turning the opposite direction. The rubber would snap back and make a hollow popping sound from the steering rack.
A couple things I found out: the retaining loop is soft and will likely be bent out of round. I bolted it back in and used a jack to bend it back to a semicircular shape; the left side bushing(under the driver) bolt was bent and could not be pulled out. It was bent and jammed inside the bushing. I had to cut it. OEM replacement was about 13 bucks; get and use the torque specs for all 3 bushing bolts.
    I hope this helps.

Bruh, you quoted my post from two months ago about reviving an old thread. Isn’t it obvious? *I’M DEAD*

I'm surprised no one has mentioned control arm bolts being loose.

To add to this 10 year old thread that I found while searching for a solution to my popping problem, other's input above helped me out a lot as it drove me to look at more than just suspension parts that could be causing the pop. It's been a few days now and I think I have my pop resolved, it was two kinda loose bolts on my front receiver that I added 6 years ago. I know this won't be the cause for many others, but it does reinforce the idea of looking around any anything else that might shift or tweak when lateral force is put on the frame. Thanks for the help!

Popping sound came back got my truck on my buddy's shop lift. Started feeling around the sway bar bushing brackets and low and behold the passenger side bracket was cracked. It was hard to see it but pulling down on the bar it was obvious. Driverside was already replaced by a donor part he had at the shop. Dealership had two brackets so I went ahead and replaced both sides so I could sleep better.
