My wife is in the Navy and will be getting re-stationed next year. We're thinking San Diego or Port Hueneme based on the options given. I'm from Fullerton originally, but need input on Port Hueneme. Only spent one drunk night there last year.

We're both 28 years old, enjoy exploring, hiking & camping, shooting guns, dive bars, and lean more conservatively. Wed like quiet, low crime areas, but occasionally enjoy going out for an evening of drinking and whatnot. We're currently in Western WA & love life here. I'm an automotive mechanic, and she..well she's in the Navy.

With this information, can anyone familiar with Port Hueneme give some input as to where might be a good place to look in the surrounding areas? Would anyone recommend PH over San Diego?

I visit my lady's grandparents there all the time (her grandpa was stationed out there) and from what I can see, looks like it's more for the older demographic. From what my girlfriend has told me, it use to be really nice but the neighborhood starting to get bad.

Not too sure what the surrounding cities are like, but I doubt they will be better than San Diego. I came from Northern California and no reside just outside of San Diego and I love it down here.

San Diego over PH by a large margin  More closer places to stuff you want to do or see. With PH you gotta drive through or around LA traffic...not good IMO.

I live in Ventura County will your wife be stationed inside the base or do you have to live outside the base? I dont hear good things about PH high in crime.

I'm starting work at the Naval base next month. Remind me by the end of the year to let you know how I like the area.

Also for anyone reading this who has experience in Ventura County, if you have any tips for me that'd be great.

Having lived in San Diego for 10 years and now in Port Hueneme, I much prefer Port Hueneme. San Diego does have a lot more things to do, however, I don't find the congestion is worth it. Outdoor activities that you mentioned, exploring, hiking & camping, shooting guns are probably a little more toward Port Hueneme, where as bike riding along the beach is more San Diego. Cost of living in both is relatively high, but if you want to go out to the city, LA is not that far away. Camarillo is a good area, with low crime and easy access to the base.

Dope. Yeah just got word she's getting stationed in Port Hueneme. I see some pretty rad beach neighborhoods near the base. Looking to rent a house around their hopefully. Maybe we'll all meet sometime next year
