Back in 1995 when my parents got a female Black Lab, they had her spayed at like 6 months old; The vet used stitches made of catgut if I remember correctly, and they dissolved as opposed to needing to be removed...

Molly (the Black Lab) lived to be 15 and died in December 2009; It was almost a decade before my parents got another dog...

Our second dog was a Corgi/Labrador mix named Mandy, who only lived to be about a year old due to congenital kidney issues; We adopted her at 11 weeks old, and she was already spayed, which I thought was far too young! I don't know if this was directly related to her age when she was spayed, but her freshly-stitched incision leaked for a couple weeks after we got her and we had to rub a warm damp sponge on her tummy regularly...

Our current dog, also a rescue, is a 5-month old male Black Lab named Porter; He came from the same organization as Mandy, and was already neutered when we got him. I've been told that it's best to wait until at least six months to spay a female dog, and I've also been told that it's best wait until the dog has had her first heat cycle; I have no idea what the recommended time is for male dogs, but I seem to remember hearing six months to a year...?

Also, here's a timeline of when we owned each dog...

    • Molly (Born December 11th, 1994; Brought home January-February 1995; Died December 23rd, 2009)
    • Mandy (Born June-July 2018; Adopted September 2018; Died July 2019)
    • Porter (Born September-October 2019; Adopted March 9th, 2020)

I'm sure standard procedures for veterinarians have changed a lot in the last 25 years!

Can’t get Porter to stay in the Tacoma (either in the bed or the driver’s the seat) to pose for a picture!

    :annoyed:

I took these pictures in the back of my dad’s Yukon while we were driving home from Porter’s first vet appointment...

His blood and urine tests came back 100% negative for kidney issues!

The visit to the vet could not have gone better! They were able to get the results of the blood test within a half hour or so! Most importantly, Porter’s kidneys are functioning normally! His urine sample was normal as well!

Porter does unfortunately have ear mites, but this is easily correctable; The doctor let us look at the slide in the microscope, and we all got to see the ear mites crawling around!

He got on his pillow! Then he saw my mom coming while I was taking the picture and started to get up...

Couple of truck rides and you wont be able to get him out after a photo session haha

He'll be like what? No truck ride??? No way you tricked me dad! I want a truck ride! I want a truck ride!

Cody hangs out in the truck for hours at home.
    Front and back.
Its good practice for when we go places too.

Glad youre having fun with your new best friend!
